As a parent can someone please tell me how do you control the use of Wi-Fi in the home in relation to your children using it for xbox(overuse)!, smartphones, social media etc?

You can limit the wireless network so only certain devices will connect using MAC addresses.

You can manually turn on/turn off the network.

    What router do you have?

    Thanks Mr G
Its a TP Link Router, Airwave provide the internet. With wi-fi I would like to control when my children can have access to it and for how long besides pulling out the socket from the wall.

To limit access to the internet get the Mac addresses of the ipads and ps3. Its under 'Device Info' or somewhere, look for the DHCP device table in the tplink admin panel.

Then add those Mac addresses under parental controls on the tplink. You can then allow internet usage at certain times, eg 6-7pm and once its 7pm internet is off. You can also setup parent control settings on these individual devices:

    Thank you Mr. G.

The Model No of the TP LInk is TL-WR740N I will do as you suggest to configure the wi-fi enabled devices in the house.

I've tried a number of different software approaches but gave up in the end and installed a NetGenie router that a friend had spare: http://www.netgenie.net/homeusers/wifirouter.html
Does the job very well, took a bit of installing as my mate had overwritten some of the settings. Principle is you assign an aged based profile to each user in the house (for me two adults, 2 teenagers (12 - 18), two younger children (0-4 and 5 - 12). When they try to access the internet from any device they have to logon as their user (with password or no password for youngest) and all of their traffic is validated against their age-appropriate setting.
You can allow sites by user, limit users by time and add devices to a whitelist based on MAC addresses.
In short I like it as it handles multiple devices and applications. Haven't found any problems or bypasses with it as yet!

    A
