Must admit there will be a lot of question marks hovering over some of our current midfield options for next season.

Lucas still has a question mark over him as to whether or not he will regain his best form. He has been back in the first team since the start of December so come the start of the season he will have had almost 8 months of either regular play or training.

Gerrard had his op on his shoulder and there is talk now that he may be out until mid to late September.

Allen had his own shoulder op, and has to have a question mark over him with regards recovery/regaining form.

Gerrard, Lucas, Allen, and Henderson for the two deeper CM slots could be a bit of a gamble, if some decent quality cover/competition is not brought in.

I think if we are signing more AMs and wide players then Henderson will feature less and less tbh unless he makes remarkable progress in terms of a deeper center midfield role.

As good as I thought he was at times this season, and I love his natural energy on the pitch, if we sign the required quality we need in those attacking areas then Henderson may not have a future at the club.

Would love to be proven wrong and hopefully he can have a season similar to last where he learns and progresses with every game, but I get the opinion that Rodgers won't trust him anywhere near the Lucas or Gerrard roles.

Definitely agree. I think signing a DM is a must. Can't remember us being linked with any though.

I dunno, with Lucas as first choice and Henderson/Allen able to play there at a good level, I think it's pretty low on the priority list...

Can't see Henderson making it at the club unless he gets a loan move to play consistently as a CM. He's not good enough at any other position and even as a CM I doubt he'll make it tbh.

With Lucas still to regain his best form since returning from injury at the start of last December, with question marks over Allen thanks to his own injury/lack of form, and with Henderson completely unproven/untested at being the main man in that role, it would appear that we would be going into the new season gambling on them all coming good if we did not add some quality in CM. Throw in the fact that Gerrard may miss the first month to six weeks of the season as he recovers from surgery, and suddenly we look a bit thin on the ground in terms of genuine quality for the two CM slots.

If Lucas can regain his form I'd be happier about it. Not a fan of Hendo at all, maybe Allen will come good, fingers crossed.

I don't have overwhelming confidence in any of those 3 at the moment, but they can all prove me wrong of course.

I think Allen played better in the 1st couple of months than what Lucas played since he came back. I know Rodgers says Allen is better suited to CM but from what I have seen I think DM suits his game perfectly, he really was outstanding at the start of last season.

Bit early to make that suggestion!!

Assaidi - non entity thus far
    Couthinho - promising start
    Borinni - poor first season
    Sturridge - promising start
    Allen - poor first season

The jury is out on this one just yet.

He is working with a limited budget tho
We simply cannot compete with the big boys on transfer funds or wages. So we cannot afford the best. We need to find value so l think he's doing quite well .

Don't think there's any question marks over the class and quality that Gerrard brings to the team.

Still question marks over Allen. Can he re discover his from from the early stages of last season and produce on it on a consistent basis?

Still question marks over Henderson. Can he add goals to his game to make him a viable option in an attacking midfield position? Is he good enough to hold down a first team position in a team that has top 4 aspirations?

Still questions mark over Lucas. Can he stay injury free for a full season? Can he rediscover his preinjury form?

Assaidi - When he started, he did well. There is far more to his story than we realise. Personally, I don't think he was a Rodgers signing.

Borini - Suffered a season long injury pretty much. Rarely started in the positions he featured for Roma (LW & ST) early doors, and was asked to play seemingly more as a traditional RW! Looked good when he came back however.

Coutinho - Excellent. Probably the greatest player in the history of football because he is Brazilian and has inho in his name, something us Liverpool supporters creamed ourselves over initially... apparently.

Sturridge - Mixed but in the main, far more positive than I expected.. so far. If he get his head up more regularly like for Henderson's goal vs Newcastle or Enrique's goal vs Swansea, he could be a hell of a player for us as he does get in great positions. Double-double player to use basketball terminology in both goals and assists.

Allen - Good to very good till his form dropped which coincided with his shoulder injury.

    Sturridge mixed:confused:
he might 1 or 2 average games but he scored 11 in 15
he has been a great signing

Sturridge will make his money back unless he turns out a total disaster. £12 Million isn't that overpriced for him at all, plenty of PL clubs would pay that easily for him.

Unusually for this thread, that's a very fair, balanced & reasonable assessment of all 5 players.

Assaidi is perplexing - remember seeing him against West Brom in the Rumbleows Milk Cup and thought he looked savage. Very strange the way he's been handled since.

He's had a few poor games, and one or two fairly average ones IMHO. But as I said, in the main he's done very well for us. Out of 10, I'd give him an 8.5 for his Liverpool career so far.

Don't buy that for a second - he was on the bench for a host of games and yet we never saw him. I can't remember seeing him in the PL tbh, just remember him in the cups.

He was very good against WBA but then again Sahin did too

Seems to take a few games to get back up to speed after injuries, I've noticed.

I'm not looking at just goals here. There were times during a fair few of the games he had me scratching my head and ignored the simpler option, even in his very good games. But heh, that's just my opinion :)

And he also seems to destroy former clubs!! He was amazing against city, and same against Chelsea when he came on at half time!!

Ah yeah, I'm well aware of that. Goes for the majority of players in any given sport. But even when he was fit he was a bit all over the shop despite his goals.

For me, he still has 2 weaknesses in his game
    1. Doesn't put his head up, he's like a stubborn horse at times, not matter how hard you pull the reins, it doesn't have the desired impact.
    2. Doesn't use his right foot enough for me, looking to get on to the left too often which means defenders don't have to second guess. I had always thought he couldn't use his right foot at all, yet V Fulham?? he scored with his right, plenty power into the roof of the net.

The Assaidi transfer is a puzzling one. He joined us on the back of an excellent season with Heerenveen with only Narsingh possibly being a better player than him that season for that team. Rodgers spoke about him in glowing terms after the transfer went through, and then pretty much gave him no sustained game time.

I guess the one positive is that the £2m/€2.4m outlay on him should be easy enough to get back if we sell him to a Dutch team with Ajax rumoured to still be interested in him.

Definitely agree. I think signing a DM is a must. Can't remember us being linked with any though.

Denilson is available on a free. He's a bit small for me to play that role, but maybe too similar to Allen - good on the ball, good retention, keeps it simple. He's too young (25) to play out his career in Brazil...

Same with Toby Alderweirld, he can also play RB and would be a decent price. Think he would be a great buy.

P.S. Anybody heading over to the Gerrard testimonial? Wonder would it be worth going over to???

Sky Sports sources understand Liverpool are interested in signing Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet but it will take a bid in the region of £9million for any possible deal.

The Belgium international is rumoured to want to leave the Stadium of Light in order to boost his 2014 World Cup ambitions and he has also been linked with Arsenal.

Liverpool could be in need of a goalkeeper given that speculation continues to link their current No.1, Jose Reina, with Barcelona.

Sunderland, though, will not be keen to sell Mignolet, who was their Player of the Year in the 2012/13 season.

But the 25-year-old has only two years remaining on his contract and Sunderland will know his value will decrease as time drags on.

However, the North East club would still want at least £9m from Liverpool, who have also been linked with Stoke City's Asmir Begovic.
