Anyone feel like we should be commissioning a few more of these to highlight the recent tragedies? Do the erectors normally consult the deceased's family beforehand?

The council took it away, promised to put it back, but didn't. Those bikes are important, because every time a driver sees one s/he knows at some level that cyclists are vulnerable to careless or unlucky driving.

There was a bike there last time I passed, but it wasn't painted white, so I thought maybe it was just someone parking there.

That particular bike was very touching indeed, because passing cyclists and locals regularly put flowers on it; it commemorated a student lad who died ten thousand miles from home.

Yes. I'm having trouble searching on mobile but there was a thread for (I believe) the first one at harolds cross bridge years ago. Lots of discussion, somehow someone got in contact with the family to seek permission, someone donated the bike, someone got onto Delaney's bike shop across the road to ask them to keep an eye on it. I think there may have even been a small unveiling when it was erected.

If there are to be more erected it would be good to get the press involved if anyone has a contact. Especially after so many recent tragedies, we need to make sure the general public know what these symbolise, and that they're not an art installation. Maybe just me, but I only know of the concept because of boards, and when pointing it out to others they presumed it was art unfortunately.

If the concept was recognised and understood, it would go a long way to serve as a reminder to everyone about safety.
