Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Shocking from the keeper

you'd expect the wall in to stay in tact. It was like the parting of the red sea.

It wasn't a pen but neither was that freekick that Luiz scored with. 50/50. Ramires lunged in too. Not a freekick. So don't be do hard on the ref.

That was a free kick, Ramires got a toe on the ball first.

A crazy penalty decision (not the first against Chelsea in the Europa League this season) almost took the win away but a combination of Luiz and Sommer have given us an important lead and two very important away goals. Amsterdam is looming.

Rameries got the ball, the the Basel player obstructed him. Clear as day free no 50/50.

That's not really relevant. Who touches the ball and who doesn't has no bearing on whether its a foul or not. For example, you can win the ball and still be sent off for reckless play. Or you can miss the player and still give away the foul.

Very happy with the result - Luiz is some player in front of the back four.

Great to see Terry and Cole playing again. Moses had a great game as well.

It's relevant here because Ramires got a toe on the ball and was then taken out.

He wasn't "taken out". He ran into the defender as much as the defender ran into him. And the ball was gone. If the ref doesn't give that penalty, you don't get that free kick. Most ref's wouldn't have given it.

The more replays I see of the pen - it was a very strange decision

How the fcuk did we not score more!gwan Luiz

Luiz shouldn't have been on the pitch so probably an injustice for Basel

Has anyone got a gif or clip of that penalty awarded. I haven't a clue what is was supposedly given for. Was it for the first or second challenge?

Deserved victory for Chelsea although Luiz would do well to hold his line in Midfield more. He must give fans heart aches at times!

Yup. Just saw the tackle in the highlights. Pretty nasty. Should have walked.

You can make anything look worse than it is with a particular shot, or a clever angle. In it's actual context it was a genuine attempt to play the ball.

Chelsea a bit lucky I'd say, but that's what happens (to Basel) if you don't take your chances.

Big win tonight. 2 away goals to bring back to the Bridge next Thursday. Nice.

Luiz could have walked for the challenge. But he didn't and he's there to score the winner. Basel feeling like Chelsea did on Sunday, maybe. :pac:

Job done for the first leg. Scoring at least one away goal was crucial, but to score 2 and to win the first leg is even better. I was hoping for a score-draw. A win is very impressive.

The Basel that put Spurs out were not in attendance tonight, it has to be said.

    lol sure sure

He should have been sent off therefore wouldn't have scored the winner.

Not that hard to fathom tbh.

Sure swings and roundabouts. A player who should have been sent off scored an equaliser against them at the weekend.

A fair result in the end.

I don't think refs like us.

 What are you on about? Chelsea had more shots and 3 times as many shots on target.

Basel were the team that wanted it more, and especially the second half were the better team imo.

The fact their attacks amounted to nothing is not my point, Chelsea weren't the better team but they took their chances.

Your stats are wrong by the way.

12 shots by Basel, 19 by Chelsea.
3 on target for the Swiss, 6 for Chelsea.
61% possession for Basel, 39 for Chelsea.

Although that penalty was a horrible decision.

Maybe this isn't the thread for it, but doesn't the penalty decision - and you could argue the Luiz tackle - once again make the case for a video referee?

FFS, the case is made in pretty much every match of the year on offside decisions alone. I don't get it. There's much more money at stake and infinitely more eyes upon it than cricket or rugby, but footie can't or won't stretch to someone calling the correct decision upon which entire tournaments can turn?

You can't use video technology to assess every single incident.

Basel putting spurs out will turn out to be a blessing in disguise. I'm thinking back to 2 weeks ago after playing 120 minutes against them and then having to play Chelsea on the Sunday with no bale or Lennon or Defoe ..we would have been hockeyed. Thank fcuk for the fa cup...now we get to go in to a one off cup final Wednesday week with hopefully our key players back minus the headache of 2 extra games.... Can't wait for it...hopefully all these games are beginning to catch up on Chelsea as its some punishing schedule they got.
