    Manual or auto?

    SWB or LWB?

    Passenger or commercial?

manual 3.2 commerical (what has commerical got ta do way realibility?)

I've never owned either the 2.5 or 3.2 models of that era, but I have driven both quite a bit. The 2.5 feels very sluggish compared to say a similarly specced landcruiser, but the 3.2 engine makes it feel much more comparable.

You never mentioned reliability in your original post ;) But since you ask, a passenger is more likely to have had a softer life with less towing and less hauling of loads. So less wear on suspension etc.

    Anyways ...

    Good;
Cheaper to purchase than the equivalent age LandCruiser
Surprisingly good mpg for the size/weight of it (30 is quite possible)
    Good load space
    Comfortable even on longer journey's
Reasonable standard specification in most cases (except 4Work trim level)
    Timing chain instead of belt
    Respond well to EGR blanking
    Good for towing
Selectable 2/4WD unlike others that are permanent 4WD

    Bad;
Fuel pumps can go and are an expensive repair
Wheel bearings have a reputation for being soft, though we've only had to replace 1 in 120k miles
DMF failures like most more modern diesels
Older ones can suffer from top timing chain guide failure, Mitsubishi revised the part for later models. Cheap to replace at @ €25 though.

If going for SWB, space/carrying capacity are next to useless. DMF is also an issue and the manual gearbox is apparently made of cheese. Automatic is supposedly far more reliable
However, overall they are well able to take abuse. Suspension components are very durable.

    Ah yes. :)

Since he said 3.2 I automatically assumed it was LWB since the 3.2 is fairly rare in SWB with the Irish loving the (apparently) cheaper option and going for the asthmatic 2.5

I have one of the "rare" :D 3.2 SWB Pajeros, which now has ~160K miles on it. To date, outside of what I would deem legitimate wear and tear items, it has needed a DMF, both rear brake calipers and is about to need a gearbox overhaul.
My regrets are that I went for a SWB and that I went for a manual. I had to buy this jeep second hand when my 3.0 Trooper abruptly decided to call it a day and the available selection was poor. Going from the LWB Trooper to a SWB Pajero was an eye opener to say the least when it came to carrying anything in the back.

You have that a good while don't you? Memory ain't the best, but I'm fairly sure yours was one of the opinions that swayed me towards the auto waaaay back when we bought ours :D

i have a 05 swb 2.5, only trouble i've had with it are the switches in the transfer box, common fault with them, centre amber diff light tends to flash on long drives and after i switch it into 4x4 mode. I've had them changed but a year later its happening again, its not down to lack of use either as i select 4x4 every couple weeks just to keep everything lubed up.

I'm told you don't need to change the switches when this happens. When you're changing the oil in the box, run it for 2-3km with diesel to wash it out then put in fresh oil. Mine won't lock the diffs or go into low range (it's never been offroad until I got it!) due to go in for a full service shortly so I'll report back!

Other than that it's a great vehicle, only thing I've driven which might compare is the new gen 3/4 discovery or landcruisers. 05 3.2 lWB.

thats a good tip, might give it a try when the oil is due to be changed

i was looking for something similar myself last october around the same age and it was suggested (and recommended repeatedly by others) on a UK pajero forum that it would only be a small jump in price to go 2 years newer with higher mileage and get a current shape 2007 model and that if it was well looked after it would be a much better option than the older previous model with lower mileage.

i ended up looking in the UK and going for a very nicely looked after 2007 elegance model with 100k on the clock with FSH from a main dealer and 1 owner (plus the dealer i got it off) for £9100 and i'm very happy that I paid that bit extra.

You'll be even happier if you ever have to replace the fuel pump - €400 vs €2500

I was very luke-warm about the newer model when it first came out, more specifically the design of the rear with the center spare wheel. Over time its growing on me though. :)

It was a mechanic told me that, he has a pajero himself so I assume he knows what he's doing. Probably shouldn't be giving away his tips! I'll let you know if it work, due to go in this month.

yeah, i thought it was silly myself to start with, but it's definitely grown on me.

the previous motor was a 1996 mk2 Pajero and the difference between the two is phenomenal. it's much more like a big car than a jeep, the handling is vastly improved and the power is amazing for something so big. i would say that the fuel economy is on par with the mk2, but with the new one motorway cruising is much much more economical. on the long journey back from the UK, i was getting 30mpg on the motorway at 70mph. short journeys are more like 20'ish mpg, but that's to be expected really.

my only regret is that i thought the elegance was the top model when i got it, but i found out afterwards that there is a diamond model with a few more extras that i would have gone for if i'd known, but i still have a dvd satnav stereo with 12 rockford fosgate speakers (inc. a big fat subwoofer in the boot), heated electrically adjustable leather seats and cruise control etc. so it's hard to complain. :)

Yep, I have put up 140 of the 160K on the clock. Another ridiculous failure I thought of was 2 front wiper linkages, each lasting approx 70K miles. I got the 1st one bodged and reinstalled it when the 2nd one failed and it's holding up so far...

i've got 325,000km's on mine now, no major issues apart from, a starter motor that slowly died, and having the 3 front wheel bearings done, i do run 20inch wheels so it doesn't help that.

mine is an 05 3.2 auto lwb and i've averaged 9.93l per 100km over the past 2 years, but that includes a lot of town driving, and towing, normal figure is between 9 and 9.5 of mixed driving.

    Hi,
I am thinking of buying an 07 SWB 3.2. are you saying here that the 07 model on don't suffer the same issues as the older 3.2's?
How did you get on with your jeep since?
