A lot of pirates operating on a shoestring who probably can't afford online streams.

    Dublin pirate update:

Soul City 92.0 sounding a bit rough today - jumping/scratching audio. Online stream is the same.
Rince 88.1 is off air at the moment.

More likely the other way around as they are outputting the song information to their stream (tricky to do that if you are relaying your FM signal).

It could have been their stream provider (UK2). I've heard some crazy audio artifact on streams hosted with them before.

i've checked again earlier today and i'm definitely convinced the stream is relaying from an fm tuner. if you listen very carefully you can hear that hiss. actually thinking back a bit i remember tuning into their stream and i could hear the signal fading in and out. personally it's something i wish more stations would do as i like listening to hear how the fm sounds. for the london pirates there is globaltuners which is very good, i don't know if you have tried it? sadly no receiver for dublin though.
depending on what software they are using they can still send the song info to the stream whether it be via a script or a third party plugin. stream seems to be off again now.

interesting. it's not something i've noticed myself. how would that happen i wonder? the host could be transcoding the stream to a lower bitrate and then rebroadcasting it to the server, but i don't think that would be the case unless the hostee bought that service as well so they can send 1 stream only and let the host do the rest.

Yes, they could be doing that. If they are – it’s certainly quite impressive that they’ve gone to that effort. The stream is offline right now, but I’ll give it a careful listen later.

The providers often use rented servers and push them to the max in terms of streams they serve out. So, the underlying server could have been under pressure at the time to relay all the streams. Or, it could have been a denial of service attack against the network (not necessarily the station, but the network that hosts the ShoutCAST servers).

Here’s an example from a few weeks back when a stream went a bit crazy. The FM output was perfect at the time. I haven’t heard it again since, but just an example of what can happen.

Actually, even though the Soul City stream is offline - they are still sending updated song information. So, it's likely this is done by script as you suggested.

They have also correctly excluded the advert/jingle information from their stream (so, song information only). The right way to do it.

Shame the stream keeps going off... :(

87.6 is NLR - a reggae pirate around west Dublin.

99.5 is Heat - a Dublin dance pirate.

It's interesting that you can pick up most of the Dublin pirates from that location, the others being Phever on 91.6 and Soul City on 92.0. The only one you did not pick up (maybe it wasn't on - I didn't check) was (Non Stop) Nineties in 107.1, but then again it's smothered by Newstalk around there.

Where exactly in Louth is this spot?
