Huge Jump In Price Of Dunnes Stores Marrowfat Peas.

Was paying 49 cent for a tin of Dunnes own brand Marrowfat Peas.
Not a special offer, just the normal price.
Recently the price jumped to 65 cent - an increase of 33 per cent.
Surely this is outrageous at a time when incomes are being cut?

It may be that this is part of Dunnes marketing strategy.

If they sell for a limited period at the higher price they can then advertise back at the lower price and say REDUCED- WAS 65c now 33c.!!!!!

    Fair play!
    You are on the ball.
    I had copped that.
Supermarkets need to be more transparent and need to be taken on by a government that is not afraid to tackle them.
You are so right in what you say - that is exactly how they operate.
Only problem is that when the 33c offer is over the 65c price will become the norm.

No, I am not being sarcastic.
What is there to be sarcastic about?
It is a serious issue with far reaching consequences.
OK, we might be talking a matter of cents in the present example,
but it contributes to millions in extra profits for Dunnes every year
and further contempt for the customer in this rip off country.

I suggest that they should be monitored more closely.
I have not bought the Marrowfat Peas since the price jump.

They should mind their pea's and queue's..

Lidl are good, although I would rate them behind Aldi.
I do sometimes shop in Lidl but I do my best to avoid one of their
    stores in Clondalkin.
Not sure of the address of that one.
Their other store in the area - in Fonthill - is a much better shopping experience.
I have never seen tins of Marrowfat Peas on the shelves in Lidl.

Looking at Aldi's tv ads I thought it was too good to be true. Having shopped there for the past 2 weeks and saving €9 to €10 each week on a fairly small shop, I'm convinced. The quality of the products surprised me, on the downside, far less choice than the main supermarkets. :D

    Yes, the choice is limited.
Although that is a significant saving prices have been
    creeping up.
    Still very good value.

Monitored more closely and then what?
Not allow them to change price?

You have noticed the "huge jump" in price and you have not brought them again. Where is the problem?

Monitored more closely and then asked to justify price increases
of 33 per cent, or of a high order.
No one ever mentioned about not being allowed to change prices except
    yourself.

The essence of retail business is that you can charge as much as you like to make as much money as you can, as much as the market will bear and if you charge too much people will buy elsewhere.

why should they be asked to justify a price increase?!

A grand uncle of mine worked with dunnes for 30 years, he would constantly tell me in all supermarket chains that if there was a good price reduction on one item and they were advertising it, you can be sure that half a dozen other items went up by a small amount to make up for it.

I maintain that they should be asked to justify excessive price increases, especially at a time when people are unable to get extra money to pay these
    increases.
Look, we are going around in circles here.
I am not going to change my position and it looks like you won't be changing yours either
    Lets agree to differ.
That is my final word on our correspondence.

You obviously haven't been following the upward price trend in marrowfat peas on the global commodities market?

Myself and other investors in marrowfat peas sense a bubble though so it wont be long before Dunnes are selling them at 20c a tin.

I'm buying a new car next week and I think that the government should alert me to all prices increases that have occurred over the last few months.
you know, with the economy the way it is and all.....
