here is a free app that puts the start button back in windows 8

    http://www.iobit.com/iobitstartmenu8.php

no need to downgrade to win 7 anymore
if you hate the metro user interface

now does anyone know how to fix the windows 8 update stuck on downloading 0% problem?

super quick look found this - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2700567

probably not what you have there.

Guessing you are on the machine right now so you have internet.

go in to the windows update window and change what you are attempting to DL - see if that helps.

All the button does is link to the metro ui, so not the start menu back as such. Being honest the metro ui has grown on me, find it easier finding stuff now than trawling through the menus. The large icons are also easier to spot

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

What do you mean it's buggy? Any specific problems? I've been using it myself now for nearly 2 years and I find it very stable and quick. Can't think of a single big issue I've come across on the final version tbh...

Windows 8 bugs i found on a brand new toshiba c870d-x11 laptop that had win 8 preinstalled on it

    1. windows update wouldn't work at all - always got stuck on downloading 0%

    2. windows 8 froze for 30 seconds every so often

    3. windows 8 would not shutdown or restart the laptop properly

    4. when installing programs it always took 2 or 3 attempts to get it to work

    5. wifi would keep turning itself off

    6. manual standalone windows updates always failed

    7. full charged battery life was 90 mins on win 8 - i get 4 hours life on win 7

since i put windows 7 on it the laptop has been running perfectly with no issues at all

Give it some time, 10-15 minutes or so. It'll then jump up to a high percentage. It's not very intuitive but it does work.

no i left it an hour and it was still stuck on 0%

its a well known issue... just google it

tbh i happy with win 7 x64 ultimate. windows 8 gui is just awful to use imo

... and any time I've seen it I've just waited and let it do it's thing.

i even tried using standalone update installers but they would fail everytime.

like i said ill wait til sp1 is available then i might try it again.

i plan on buying a 480gb ssd drive for the laptop in a few months. when i get it ill try win 8 again to see if it is any better then. if it is still buggy then ill just clone the drive i have now onto the ssd drive and continue using win 7
