Looking for advice on a location for 60th birthday party in the city.

    Hotels or something similar.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks.

I want to check out suggestions here first before i go searching the web and calling round hotels etc.

FYI Scotts is out as a location.

    Thanks.

Only one place for it - top floor of the strand. Although the Clarion is good too, been to similar partys at both

Not a hotel but St. Mary's RFC is a nice venue, you'd have bar to yourselves and they just charge 100 snots for insurance

Top floor of the strand is excellent but has a minimum spend of €1,500 for food and room which is pricey enough.

The clarion are doing a special offer at the moment. We got a leaflet in the door about it so worth contacting them about it.

Been to a few birthdays in the Locke, nice venue if a little cosy (all depends on your numbers I guess)

I'd consider it big for a party but small for a wedding. It's supposed to cater for 70 to 100. Lovely room though.

Ya couldn't believe it when we enquired. Especially with the amount of money they would make off drink on the night as well. They said if there was anymore than 70 the price would go up. I don't know how they would know the exact numbers but 1,500 is just a base price and it could be more expensive.

Is this the one on the bridge, right hand side as you head towards the strand (snooker hall out the back)? We had my brothers fancy dress 30th at halloween there a few years back. Great choice!

Have to say, with the right makeover and better marketing - this place could be a real money maker. A total waste of a venue, all too easily overlooked. Lovely views too!

There is only one place that I could not reccommend highly enough The Hamptons Restaurant which is part of the 5* Savoy Hotel in the city centre opposite Dunnes Stores the best dinning experience and a magnificant ambience

I had my wedding party there at Christmas time and it was fab. It is still a club so while there is a desire to make some dosh from parties that dosh is more likely to go into rowing activities than doing the place up or a marketing campaign. There is no desire to make it a party venue first and clubhouse second. As far as I know they are reasonably selective about who can hold a party there - someone on the committee has to be able to vouch for the party. While its a little run down I love it the way it is and would hate to see it become too commercialised.

I can't vouch for the Pier one myself but I know someone who had a party there and was very happy and it was very reasonable.

Lovely views from the top floor of the Strand but I personally find it a tad on the stuffy side. Was at one party there - food was fab - but atmosphere a little formal.

They should be happy to fill a room and makes sales on drink and food

You do get food for the 1500 - and good food at that, - it's not that they charge 1500 for the room, it's just that is the minimum spend if you book the room.

To be fair to the Strand, the room is in high demand - it's got the best view of the city and they are probably charging a fair market price. No business should be required to 'just be happy' with their lot - everywhere is entitled to maximise their profit. It's a great room for a small but upmarket wedding and there aren't many places who could compete with it for that.

I'd say if they weren't getting that sort of money then they wouldn't be charging it. It's not like they are sectioning off the corner of a bar and serving up a few sandwiches and cocktail sandwiches.
