    Hi chaps

This is more asking about rom-hacking, but then again we do cover editing here :P

as well as looking at learning how to make a basic platformer, I'm also very interested in some of the reverse work people have done with the Sonic The Hedgehog (Megadrive) games.

    For example, Sonic Megamix
Sonic Megamix was first exploded onto the ROM hacking scene back in 2005, setting all new high standard for Sonic Hacks worldwide. It was the re-imagination of the original Sonic the Hedgehog, offering a much more vibrant style

Sonc Megamix was one of the first hacks to offer new characters, bringing into the mix Mighty and Shadow, alongside the trio that is Sonic, Tails and Knuckles

The above seems a modification of Sonic 2, with all new levels & graphics etc. Again being a complete & total newb here...how do people do this? Is the rom decompiled back to code, modified & then compiled again or something?

    Take a look at http://www.romhacking.net/

They have tools and utilities for hacking old games, some games even have special tools dedicated to that game. You could read the documentation provided with the tools to find out how they put the code together.
