Just a heads up on what I was told this evening. Two supposed Eircom employees called to a house on Skerries Rd Lusk today wanting to know if the occupant was with Eircom. When they replied that they were customers they were then asked was it ok to erect signs on the gable of the house to say what phone company they were with............

How does that information prove they were bogus? Did anyone contact eircom or CPM (the company that employs the reps for eircom) to confirm if they were legit?

In fairness, would you let a stranger put up an Eircom sign either end of your house ?? I have never seen one anywhere else .

I can't see what benefit it would be to anyone NOT connected to eircom to erect a sign on a property saying the householder is an eircom customer  I can't see what scam would arise from erecting an eircom sign if it was not eircom who called to the house?? Perhaps eircom are trying to market in a particular area or something, using current customers to promote the service.

Without checking with eircom or CPM there is no way to know if these people were bogus based upon the information provided. If they did/said something in addition to asking are you with eircom? can we put a sign? then yeah, maybe it is suspect, but until that information is provided I can't see how the situation suggests that it was bogus.

It's suspicious that 2 eircom workers didn't know whether the house was a customers or not.
Never ever heard of utilities asking to put such signs up after the fact, so again that's suspicious.
In order to do that, they need access to the land which is something to be wary of.

There's plenty of warnings going around of bogus charity collectors, utilities, council workers etc. so the suspicion is wise and warranted.

no its not. Reps are issued with lead lists. By the time they get these lists the information on them can be a week old. The lists have a couple of hundred customers on it. By the time they work through the whole list the information can be up to a month out of date. With online facilities where customers can change over themselves on line, it is not unusual for a customer to change provider during this time. In addition, the information provided to the data team to issue the lead lists is often incomplete, resulting in at least 10% of the leads being existing customers. This is the norm with sales lists for this sort of business. Also there is no way for a rep to phone eircom and ask if a customer is with eircom or not, as Comreg have deemed doing this as uncompetitive - because eircom own the wholesale lines only they know if a customer is with eircom or another provider by looking at the account. As other comms companies do not have access to this information, Comreg in their wisdom have deemed it a competative advantage were eircom to use this information to identify customers who may be with another provider.

Hence, why being a door to door customer winback agent is a sucky job and very hard to meet targets - because the information you get to start with is often crap.

Who said they were reps. Do door-to-door reps now erect signs?
