HTPC: Broken mobo LAN?

    Hi all,

Hardware isnt my strong point but would like to run this by people here and see what solutions I have.

Basically running a HTPC with this asus mobo. Over the weekend the following symptoms appeared

    1) Upon rebooting vista took ages (ie 30+ mins) to load rather than the normal 3 mins. Stuck on the sliding green bar....
    2) Once loaded, I have no network connection
    3) If I tried to disable the integrated NIC the OS would hang forcing a hard reboot.

At first I suspected a virus, while loading a USB Kaspersky Rescue 10 Disk to scan for viruses, it too failed to recognise the network.

As I have a backup via WHS, I created a WHS recovery USB key, but it also failed to come up correctly.

So late last night I disabled the NIC in the BIOS and now the OS starts up as expected (minus the LAN). So from this it seems to me the integrated NIC has given up the ghost? Is there any other analysis I could do to confirm?

So how to get back onto the LAN? The mobo spec says:

    1 x PCIe x16
    2 x PCIe x1
    1 x PCI

of which I am currently using this to capture TV.

So would a PCIe NIC card do the job? Anybody able to recommend a reliable stable cheap GB card?

    Thanks
    W.

    FYI:

After much head scratching etc, the fix is to completely turn off the PC and leave simmer for 30 mins. That fixed it (got from many google searches). Another suggestion is if next time change the duplex setting on the NIC properties for duplex to the explicitl capacity you expect....ie 100Mb/1Gb etc...

    W.
