Growing lavender

I've just dug a 5metre by 400mm trench in a sunny corner of my garden.
I want to plant about 25 small lavender augustofolia in a row. The earth is quite heavy so I intend to add some grit and bagged compost. Should I apply weed killer to ground now and if so how long should I wait before planting?
Also do I put down a weed controlling membrane?
    Thanks for any help.

Lavender is pretty strong and dense, shouldn't need any membrane.

If you just dug it over there wouldn't be any weeds visible to kill either.

Put some grit into the soil if you have it, but don't bother with the compost. Lavender likes poor gravel-like soil better. Plant away.
