as seasons end around the continent, i think would be good to get an idea how the posters on here are feeling about their teams season...

highlights/lowlights, most pleasing aspect etc etc? hopes for next season?

for the LOI fans, about 25% of the season done, are you happy with how things are going?

I'm a Leeds fan, happiness is an alien concept.

Other than a couple of good young players coming through, most notably Sam Byram, it's been a shambles of a season. Dreadful kick and run football from Warnock despite the fact that some of the team were incapable of running. The sooner the season is over the better. The takeover saga dragged on for ages, and now it seems our new owners may have even less money than Ken Bates.

On the plus side, we have a good new manager who, if the board manage to find a few quid down the back of the couch for him, could turn things around. And Warnock and Bates are gone. Maybe it wasn't such a bad season after all.

Very happy regardless of whether we finish top 4 or not. AVB is doing a great job.

    Newcastle: No

Bohemians: Mixed. Good start, faltered but putting good results together at the right time.

It's been up and down to say the least.

Positives: some massive victories (6-0, two 5-0s, two 4-0s), young talent like Sterling and Suso given its fling, goals much easier to come by (despite regularly lamenting missed chances), style of football great to watch when it clicks, Suarez in the form of his life

Negatives: deplorable defeats to clubs in bottom half of table, shockingly low number of home wins, complete lack of even a top 4 challenge (was possibly within reach this season given so-so form of other teams), this whole 'building for the future' craic, Suarez still behaving like a brat

Overall: some good signs but not enough to declare it a good season, admittedly we started from a low base but talk of progress not evident on the field, again left with a summer of hoping for better things next year

Yes :) quite happy. League won 3 weeks ago and two more finals left where 'my' team are deemed favourites. What a year.

    Athlone Town:
No, not really, losing to Longford and drawing with Mervue were not great results, but all the same we are only 3 points off second place, Longford are already way out in front though :(

    Milan:
Er, reasonably happy so far, we they get 3rd place I'll be delighted, Allegri has done a really good job considering the circumstances, losing De Jong was a big hit early in the season but having youngsters like Niang, De Sciglio and El Shaarawy having such good break through seasons is a massive plus and the singing of Balotelli is looking like a great piece of business already, he's be fantastic since he signed. Pazzini is also having a blinder of a second half to the season.

All in all, Milan are doing better than I thought they would in November!

    LOI 33% done, no?

Cork City FC : Very disappointing so far.

Highlight : Setanta Cup run & Daryl Kavanagh's performances.

Lowlight : Apart from the spirit sucking late goals conceded, its the lack of cohesion and purpose in our play that is disheartening.

    Question marks over manager's ability.

I'd disagree with the bit in bold. Very competitive up there right now.

Last 5 years points wise for 4th place

    11/12 69pts
    10/11 68pts (71 got second)
    09/10 70pts
    08/09 72pts
    07/08 76pts

Looking like 71 is going to be needed at a minimum this year. Which is above the average for the last 3 years (and the first two, 07/08 & 08/09 had the 4th placed team well ahead of the 5th - essentially Everton and Spurs weren't a factor then).

What it tells me is that the Manchester clubs have gotten further away from the pack but that the competition for the last two spots is better than ever. Chelsea have dropped back but I'd expect them to kick on from next season on meaning that there'll only be one spot between 3/4 teams well capable of getting it.

    Chelsea :

League wise its better then last year when we finished 6th behind Newcastle and Spurs, this season we're in position to finish in the top4.

Domestic cups, disappointed to lose out in both semi finals, one to Swansea thansk to Ivanovics 2 terrible msitakes and Hazard kicking the ball boy took the spot light off a poor 2 legged performance, after beating Utd in a QF replay we limped out to the odds on favourite City, although we should have had a peno and 2 possible red cards while the game was 2-1.

UCL defence was a shambles and rightly got RDM the sack, Rafa and the squad have done well at home inthe Europa League but away performances have left a lot to be desired, we could still amke the final depending on tonights performance.

If we manage to finsih in the top 3/4 and win the EL it will have been a decent season, was always going to be near impossible to top what happened in Munich last May.

Man Utd: Yes, but Real Madrid game still hurts a little.

Hibs:Yes/No League was was great till November. Things could be super come 26th May though.

Cork: Not happy with the performances

Spurs : No Performance issues from key players have held us back massively this season Ade in particular and defensively as well we have been poor at times.
Very Happy with AVB though tactically we seem better and a real resolve to fight to the last minute has been bread through the team.

Galway United: Definetly not  hopefully gust can get a licence for the upcoming season.

Bohs: Can't complain about our league position, built up a decent gap between us and the bottom 3. Performances haven't been great though, especially defensively. It's not an easy job for Callaghan though and I'm happy enough with what we've done this season.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Rovers: Need a striker, but also some incision in midfield. Highlight would be the glimpse of Foran and McGuinness together at the back and particularly Foran's overall composure, control and pace. Including the red against Bohs.

Barcelona: League title reclaimed, but freshness and not signings from La Masia are required to inject some pace and pressure into the front line. The 4-0 win against Milan showed what is still achievable should this re-emerge.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,711 ✭✭✭keano_afc

Arsenal: Yet again hampered by selling our best players and not replacing them. Took a massive gamble by not bringing in a back-up striker in January and we'll find out in about 3 weeks whether the gamble has paid off. Disappointing overall, embarrassing cup exits to lower league sides and the team only really started playing to its potential after the pressure was off.

The funny thing is you could copy and paste the above and use it to describe the last 6 or 7 seasons.

West Ham: Delighted. Started like a train and were in or around the European places in December (the massive win against Chelsea was a highlight). Then Diame got injured and Carroll was out for a while which resulted in a bit of a slump. Thought we were heading for a relegation battle but we've picked it upin the last month or so and but for a crazy decision from a linesman, we would've beaten Man Utd a few weeks back. Playing some great football as well despite what some people seem determined to believe.

UCD: Relatively pleased with the position we're in even if it only came about last Friday. Left a few points behind us (Cork and Dundalk) and the referee made it impossible to get points against Bohs. It's a very young squad though, even for UCD. The game against Shels on Friday will determine how happy I am a third of the way through.

City: In the league, we're doing fairly average. It's a slight improvement (two points more) on this time last year, but we'll really have to push on in the next ten games or so. The late goals are, of course, something that needs to be sorted out for this to happen. After the poor start to last season, we managed to have a decent start to the summer (13 points from seven league games in May and June), so hopefully we can do something similar. It would make top four and possible European qualification look a lot more likely.

We did well in the Setanta Cup and we earned a handy bit of money from it, but the manner in which we were knocked out was just horrible. It completely took away from what was a good run.

    Liverpool

Overall a disappointing and frustrating season.

As usual we couldn’t capatalise on other teams mistakes and couldn’t get a proper run of results together. Some good performances were followed by baffling performances.

High Points: Suarez and the arrival of Coutinho. Henderson has improved a lot as well but still has a long way to go.
Low Points: The performances in the cups, Suarez, Borini’s injury, no consistency and naïve performances. The start of the season was terrible as well.

    Manchester United

Overall pretty happy. Young players who were naieve last year used that experience to make sure they claimed this years title. Romped to it infact and I think it sends a real message to everyone else.
The young guys have come on very well this year, highlighted by Jones excellent Madrid performance and Wellbecks in the second leg. Rafael emerging as a top right back. Van Persie obviously icing on the cake.

Only downside is the exit out of domestic cups and most obviously the Champions League was sickening and still hurts. Felt we could have mounted a good challenge. Hopefully that fixture and the confidence provided from such a blistering league win will give confidence to the squad to mount a heavy challenge in Europe next year.

Looking forward to the summers transfer activity

    Manchester United.

Delighted. It was all about reclaiming the league title for me. Anything else that came our way would have been a bonus.

Really happy with the progress of some individual players too. Notably Evans, De Gea, Carrick and Jones.
Carrick has just stepped up his game to another level from an already very capable player.

Most would say it was unlucky to go out of Europe the way it happened but I was happy enough with the performances in the CL. A big improvement on last year anyway.

Delighted so far for LTFC. A bit annoyed with the whole match-fixing thing and our lack of clean sheets, but we've been scoring lots of goals thanks to David O'Sullivan who has been a major find. 9 goals, all from play. Dug us out of a few holes too. Hopefully he will and we will keep going and get promoted without the need for a play-off.

Arsenal: No, but not for the reasons a lot of other have mentioned (RVP leaving). I think we've done pretty well considering his absence, we've scored plenty of goals, what's stopped us from progressing has been the lack of improvement in defense. This was epitomised last Sunday when our most experienced defender gifted United a goal, costing us 2 points. Steve Bould's appointment was supposed to have been consolidated the defence, but there have been worse mistakes this year than ever before. We have good defenders, but our defence is awful.

That stat is incredibly misleading. Our defenders have consistently made a balls of things and cost us points on many occasions over the season. Obviously teams who are lower in the league are going to concede a lot more goals and suffer much worse hammerings than a team who finish 3rd/4th/5th, we've lost more points than teams in a similar positon to us as a result of defensive errors. Actually, there's no way that stat could be true, is it?

Liverpool: Overall a very disappointing season, getting beaten by Oldham was the low point of the season.
Don't know what is going to happen next season because Suarez's future remains uncertain and we need to replace Carragher.

Celtic: The high point was in the champions league and getting through to the knockout stages.
The League hasn't been the same without Rangers, I miss watching the old firm derbies.

I don't think we've made more defensive mistakes than the other top 5 sides.

People just highlight them more because it was a problem in seasons past, but this season we've been good. We've been good at holding onto leads, too. I think someone posted a few weeks back that we'd dropped fewer points from winning positions than most of the other top teams, could be wrong though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,341 ✭✭✭✭Chucky the tree

Every team in the top 5(and in the league) will be able to point to lots of goals were they felt their team defended really poorly and should/could have done better.

Yeah, maybe it is just highlighted more when it comes to Arsenal. While we have been good at holding on to leads, we've made a habit of conceding early goals and then relying on out attacking players to dig us out of a hole (the fulham and Liverpool games spring to mind).

    Nottingham Forest:
Given that our squad consists of 66% new players, and that we've had three managers in one tumultous season, to be outside the playoffs on GD only, going into the last game of the season, is not too bad at all. Had our Kuwaiti owners brought in Billy Davies in January instead of Alex McLeish, a playoff spot would already be guaranteed. The emergence of young Karl Darlow in goals is exciting, looks like he's gonna be a top class keeper. Next season is one to look forward to.

    Napoli:
The implosion of both Milanese and Roman teams has helped greatly, but none the less its been a very good season from the Partenopei. They are guaranteed to finish in second place, Napoli's highest placing since they last won Serie A in 1990. Being back in the CL next season should help attract the better players, they'll need to if Cavani leaves in summer. They have been a little more consistent than last year, and are finishing the season much stronger. Their CL exploits last year and dramatic loss to Chelsea took the wind out of them. No such distractions this year (ignored the Europa League which is disappointing but expected). The signing of Gamberini and Britos playing more regularly helped to make Napoli less brittle at the back. Although the sale of Lavezzi to PSG hurt, Hamsik has upped his game and filled in well. The emergence of Insigne as a conventionsl winger of genuine talent had also helped soften the loss of Lavezzi. Mazzarri does not have the depth of talent to compete with Juve at the moment. A few more signings in the summer could help change this.

    Limerick FC:
Less than a dozen games into the season and I'm more than happy with Limerick's performances. Showing great composure not usually seen from promoted teams. Stewart Taylor has then playing good stuff. The new signings such as Danny Galbraith and Craig Curran are blending in very well with the local talent such as Shane Treacy and Barry Ryan. Ive been very impressed by Galbraith on the wing (easy to see why he was once with United) and the centre mid pairing of Gamble and O'Leary. We are hard to beat, hard to break down and have showed tremendous fighting ability when three times coming back from a goal down with only ten men. Average attendance at Thomond has been over 2k which is great to see. Should comfortably stay up this season.

    Everton
Not bad, not great, pretty much what I expected. The team has the potential to finish very highly in the table, shown by our decent record against the current top 5 (3 wins, 3 draws, 3 defeats so far). Our performance in the majority of those games was the most pleasing aspect of the season.

However we've let ourselves down badly against inferior opposition. The most disappointing result this season was the 3-0 FA Cup quarter final defeat at home to Wigan. They drew Milwall in the semi and are now in the final. David Moyes' dreadful "tactics" against inferior opposition, and his ridiculous team selections (particularly starting Neville 6+ months after everyone in the stands could see his legs were gone) have cost us dear and are a really bitter pill to swallow. The other big disappointment was the loss in form of Nikica Jelavic, if he had chipped in with 12-15 goals this season (which in itself would have marked a dip in form on last season), who knows what the table would look like.

Im an Ipswich fan so it's been a mixed season. When the year started I think all of us fans were quietly confident of a decent season, maybe a mid-table finish with an outside chance of challenging for the playoffs. Obviously the start of the season was an absolute disaster and the players clearly lost all faith in Jewell. When he got the job I was excited for what he could do-stabilise the club and hopefully succeed like he did at Bradford and Wigan....that obviously didnt happen!

When we hired McCarthy in November we had 4 points on the board and relegation was a distinct possibility but, as ever, Mick was able to bring stability and get decent players to play at their best. He isnt the best manager in the world by any stretch but he is a very good manager in the Championship and he righted the ship and started to get our players to play with a bit more confidence.

It was the opposite of when Keano was in charge, when players were apparently frozen by the fear of making mistakes. Or under Jewell where there were just too many distractions from day one. With Mick we were able to get solid production from decent players (DJ Campbell and Daryl Murphy were effective for us) but we didnt get the kind of production you'd want from Jay Emmanuel-Thomas but maybe next year he will be more settled.

Defensively we were a shambles at the start of the season but Mick did well to steady that area of the team and I think that Aaron Cresswell showed he has the potential to be a very good full back and Tommy Smith looked to be back to the form of a couple of years ago. We have solid players to build on and I hope that Mick doesnt spend big money over the summer.

Id prefer us to spend wisely on free transfers and get back to developing players through the youth academy. That was always a strength of ours, look at the team that went to the premiership and the few years after that and we produced a steady stream of superb players; Richard Wright, Kieron Dyer, Titus Bramble (he was good for us at least!), Darren Ambrose, Ian Westlake, Darren Bent, Owen Garvan and some others. We won the FA Youth Cup five years ago and I dont think any of those players are still at the club.

Back to the current year though and for Mick to have gotten us to safety was a terrific achievement and on Sunday we could finish as high as ninth and only a few points off the playoffs. In other words he has managed to get us to achieve what I had hoped for at the start of the season even though it took us 13 games to get our first win!

I mean this in the best possible way, but I think your expectations are a little unrealistic. Liverpool were never, ever making a top 4 challenge this season, its harsh to call it a negative when this in fact turned out to be the case.

A bad season for the two clubs I follow, things just get worse and worse for Blackburn and Bilbao fell apart after losing Javi Martinez and with Bielsa going off the rails a bit with his rants.

The guys I work closest with are United fans, Villa fans and two Sligo Rovers fans. The Villa fans are still very tense and worried although I think they are safe now. The United fans are just always on about how great their manager is. The Sligo fans talk about how things can easily go backwards for them. They credit Paul Cook for most of what has happened with them over the last few years. They don't like the football as much since Baraclough took over and they are not expecting that the success will last under him even though they won their first league title for donkey's years last season.

Shels: Dreadful, absolutely shocking and 6 points should be a must this weekend. If we fail to win at least one, Matthews has got to go.

Watford: I'll tell you after Saturday :pac: Great season regardless but I hope if Hull were to win on Saturday, that Watford aren't too downhearted for the play offs, as they are definitely the best team of the 4.

    Liverpool:

    Just about!

Brendan was never going to work miracles, and yes there have been some abject performances, but I think overall strides have been made in the right direction. Coutinho is going to be a fantastic player and the thoughts of him and Suarez playing at the top of their game is mouth watering.Week by week Lucas is returning to the form he showed pre injury and even Henderson has come on quite a bit and the midfield postiton looks a little less worrying. If a top centre half and someone to play wide right can come in over the summer we will at least have a decent squad to challange for a top 4 spot.

I'd like to see some on the young lads loaned out tho if they are not in Brendan's immediate plans- Suso, Sterling, Yesil,Robinson, Shelvey and Sterling would all surely be taken by a lower end prem team or championship side.

    Man United

Regaining the the league was the main thing, Europe was a big disappointment, I think we should of won the first leg in Madrid but having said that we would not of won this year, Dortmund and Bayern were just too strong.

I was impressed with Rafael and Carrick, the latter has been very solid in midfield and broke up a lot of opposition play. Jones has put in some great performances this year, 1st leg in Madrid was his best. I can see him being a future captain.

Hope midfield is strengthened in the summer and if rooney is leaving I hope its done early in the summer so it won't drag on and on.

    Manchester United

Can't not be happy with the season, both in terms of what the team achieved and the way they approached the league this season (to blitz all before them)

High Point: Winning the league, Robin Van Persie slotting in seamlessly, Rafael becoming a top full back, Michael Carrick spitting in the face of his doubters wrong and David De Gea pissing on his.

Low Point: Performances in the FA Cup when I felt we had more than enough to take it

Madrid wasn't a low point for me. Every man and his dog knows we were done in there by vomit inducing reffing. I was proud of the teams performance. There players couldn't have gave any more than they did.

    Sligo Rovers:

2012 - Fantastic. Played good football and won our first league title in 35 years. A season I'll never forget :)
2013 - So far, meh. The competition in the league isn't that good bar 1 or 2 teams IMO. We got off to a fantastic start and have been winning despite injuries and poor performances. Little bit of a rough patch at the minute having lost to Pats in the league, Drogs in the setanta cup and only drawing with them in the league last week. Derry look strong and will put up a fierce challenge.

Best moment: Title win of course!
Worst moment: When Danny North tore his ACL in the summer, thought things were going to go downhill fast but Mark Quigley stepped up.

    HSV:

Inconsistency is the word to describe the season. We play fantastic one week, beating teams much better like Dortmund & Schalke, then follow it up with losses and draws against teams at the bottom like Fürth, Augsburg and Fortuna. Nobody knows the actual position best suited to our top scorer (Heung-min Son). Our manager is tactically inept, and you can tell how most games are going to go after 30 minutes as he is incapable of making influential changes during games. But somehow the team is only 1 point outside a European place. Also on course for a heavy loss of €10m-€15m which is very bad.

Best moment: Beating Dortmund 4-1 in Dortmund.
Worst: Losing 9-2 to Bayern :o

    Chelsea:

Mixed season, at best. So many positives, and yet so many negatives.

Come back to me in about 3 weeks when everything is decided and I'll tell you. The possibilities:

-Get Top 4 and win Europa League: wet dream
-Get Top 4, runner-up Europa League: dream
-Finish 5th, win Europa League: no... please, god, no...
-Finish 5th, runner-up Europa League: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! WHY, GOD?!?!?! WHY?!?!?! (absolute, ultimate nightmare)

    F.C. Internazionale Milano

Currently languishing in 7th in the Serie A, with qualification for ANY European Competition looking so unlikely at the moment... I'm still looking about and wondering where in the fúck it all went wrong post-Treble. Losing Mourinho and a squad that was rapidly approaching its sell-by-date all contributed, and not a helluva lot has been done to alleviate either problems.

Humiliating losses in the league (to the likes of Siena (twice), Atalanta (twice)) are bad enough, but the inconsistency is what's killing the team.

In Europe, the demoralising loss to Spurs only compounded the loss in the Coppa Italia to Roma. In fairness, Inter only have themselves to blame for the loss to Spurs. Spurs were allowed to boss the first leg and then Inter allowed them to claw an away goal in Extra Time.

Not a good season at all for the Nerrazzuri. And it is a long way to fall yet. Other Italian teams have consistently improved a lot in the 3 years since Inter's greatest triumph. But failing to replace key squad members and failing to find someone who could come close to TSO as a manager has led to the stuttering form of Inter of late.

    Liverpool:

Hmm its probably about what I expected, I never saw us been top 4 but I was hoping we would be in with a decent chance up to the last game of the season.

Any true supporter should be able to see this year we have rebuilt and started again, and wiped away the years of mismanagement. I think this will be the most important transfer window yet we need another few gems like coutinho and sturridge, if we dont push on we are back to square one again. Holding on to Suarez is vital it would really set us back if we sell him unless by some miracle we re-invest that money very well.

On BR im reasonably happy - he has gotten alot of Dalglish's buys performing to a much higher level and has introduced a very good brand of football. Defensively we have been a shambles many times this season so atleast 1 new top class centre back is required. An experienced replacement for JC wouldnt go a miss either.

Overall im far more positive than this time last season.

Borussia Dortmund: Those two losses against Sch**** were the absolute low, but the Champions League was great so far, let's put the icing on the cake on May 25th.

Shels: The first win in 11 attempts? That could be much better.

Success : Yes, winning the league was of utmost importance, not good enough to compete in Europe which is blatantly obvious.

Failure : Style of play has being shocking for most of the season and has regressed even further than last season, grinding wins for 90% of the season against cannon fodder isn't how we are meant to play....
