Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Yes, probably true I reckon. They probably have mixed race colleagues, shout for a team full of different nationalities etc. but they just use the worst possible insult when they want to abuse someone for missing a peno!

Can't be letting them off the hook on that basis, though, imho.

Anyone else finding the Athletic not really worth the subscription?

I was considering a subscription as the quality of journalists joining was impressive. My main concern is that it's specific to teams, so whilst I would be interested in news/analysis on my team, not so much on others. Are there any general articles or is it all team specific?

    Sorry to derail thread!

Is it time to rename this 'The general football podcast discussion thread (with occasional reference to Second Captains)'

The subscription is feck all really (for the first year anyway) so it depends if you think it's not even worth feck all.

The Athletic UK has been fantastic so far and they still have more big names to come on board. And, if you like US sport, it's worth every penny.

I didn't feel like he was letting them off more saying that they might go unnoticed if some of the rags in England didn't just search twitter for the nonsense so they have something to write about. Pouring fuel on the fire basically. I agree with him.

Here are some of the tweets aimed at Pogba

Two of the accounts no longer have any content and what I can find they were only set up on the day. Adamrobbie1 joined in August 2019. OnlyTalkingFax no longer is an account but a Twitter search shows people saying that that account was only set up for two days.

BCollinsSport had a racist tweet about Pogba attributed to him, on the day of the abuse I looked at his profile. He looked to be a middle aged, sports reporter mostly tweeting fairly mundane football stories. He had a history of normal tweets. He tweeted to say that the Pogba tweet was not him and he has reported it to Twitter. His account has since been disabled. He did seem to be a reporter though and the wording of his abuse, "Disgrace from Pobga. N*****s have no place in this type of game" was a bit odd. What 'type of game'? It, for me, the wording doesn't sound right for a reporter. Although the tweet was at 22.41 and he could have had a few beers on him and decided to blow his cover.

Wonder if the lads got any additional subscriptions due to the Andy Moran interview?

Richie literally couldn’t believe his luck when Andy came pouring with that. He was speechless! Very interesting listening to be fair to all concerned. Actually replayed that whole bit of his admitting to retirement about 3 times.

They got great coverage out of it as every media article had to plug the lads. Big Richie in for a hefty bonus all going well for him!

Or you could wait until Sunday to subscribe, you get the whole back catalog when you subscribe

Almost certain you're subscribed for a month from the day you subscribed, not a calendar month.

That's what you'd logically think, but not the impression you get from the plugs for world service. "Now is the best time to sign up" etc

While I think there is something to be said for not highlighting individual tweets/tweeters, if a BAME footballer is getting blasted with multiple instances of racial abuse, it is news and needs to be reported on in some fashion, I think.

I've the free month and find it fairly hit and miss. Not that many articles out each day either, though a great one about the trouble at Bolton today in fairness. Would be nice if there was a general football tab, so you didn't have to go into each league to read articles about that league.

All the US content on the landing page is still annoying too.

I've got the free month trial and genuinely can't see myself paying for the year. I just don't find the majority of the articles that interesting. I enjoy Michael Cox's stuff (to a point) and I like Rafa Hogenstein, but I'm not really interested in paying £30 based on what I've seen in the first month so far.

You may be right about this actually. Murph mentioned again that now is the best time to sign up on the football pod yesterday as it was the 2nd of September.

Anyone know if Ken is right about the pronunciation of Moise Kean? I tend to go with the wisdom of crowds on these things but maybe that's not such a good idea with this particular crowd. Anyway, 'Moyes Keane' is a perfectly appropriate name for an Everton player:P

Miguel Delaney seems to think that the Spurs squad is going to be great once they fit and rested????

It's not like they are going to have any rest from now on and he seemed to be sure that they would get more rested and fitter!
    Bizarre

The problem there is you're trying to apply logic to a point made by Miguel Delaney

Only a 30 minute podcast for me this week. I can barely stomach Miguel, but it's the lads' pandering to him that pushes me over the edge of "okay done listening to this episode".

He is so inarticulate when being interviewed, his journalistic career is one of the miracles of our time. I can't remember one remotely interesting or cutting edge thing he's ever written.

While I can see why people don't like Miguel he's gotten loads of scoops over the years with his newspaper journalism so bit harsh to say he's never done anything remotely interesting. I don't mind him on the pods but they have better contributors generally, as you say he's not very articulate when spoken to on podcasts. Jonathan Wilson or Jonathon Liew are far better guests IMO.

If it was secondary school, I'd assume that many lads hang around with him because they're dying for a cut off his sister or something.

I dunno lads, he splutters and false starts his sentences his a bit, but is he really thaaaat bad?

Obviously he's not a patch on their more articulate or perceptive guests, but I don't know if he's honestly any worse than most of the others they usually have on. I always try to listen out for the stuff that supposedly makes him far worse than all the others - and I still don't think he's noticably bad. Just a totally bog standard contributor to Second Captains.

I don't get the pandering thing either. The lads ask him questions and he answers? They aren't saying he's the best in the business?

Yeah, I find him hard to listen to and I'm not a fan of his written opinion/analysis either, but those are issues of taste, and he certainly seems to be wired in as a journalist.

Genuinely cant recall one scoop, can you point out one please? Not been facetious, but I just find his work so completely forgettable.

Getting scoops isn't a great trait for me anyway. Who cares if its him or someone else who breaks it.

Something like mark tighe and the fai stuff is good journalism.

MD telling me chelsea will sign someone two hours before its announced is not

Was just about to say the same. Being pally pally with agents in order to break a story first doesn't equate to journalism. Delaney's often wrong about transfers anyway. Transfer speculation is just a cesspit of sports news and "journalism".

As someone else pointed out, it's impossible to separate Delaney's twitter persona to his podcast contributions. He's a childish prick, to put it bluntly. He's like a spoiled child that never grew up.

Really enjoyed the chat with Richard Seymour on Ken's political podcast. I wanted it to go on a bit longer especially the bit about comparing the Woke folk to trolls.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,417 ✭✭✭Beersmith

Politics pod was quite good alright.

Todays Abbottowns press conference notes was so boring and long. It was a past a joke they talked about it so much. Kens little bike story was the only saving grace.

People don't already know that?! Its fine pointing out 1 or 2 stupid questions but it was 5+ minutes of it. Usually the journalists listen to a 30min press conference and relay a few interesting seconds/minutes.

I see Off The Ball got the live show this year with Roy Keane & Gary Neville via Cadburys instead of Second Captains - I wonder why that is?

Probably because he didn't want to listen to Ken crowing about how right he was about Mourinho.

Actually I noticed there was no outside broadcast with a former Premier League player a few weeks ago and thought it was odd.

his mention of Walters crying on TV over his family is as low as I've ever heard from Keane. Even the biggest Keane lovers would be turned off him after his.

When Clive Clarke (an ex player of Keane’s Sunderland) got a heart attack during a league cup game when he was on loan somewhere else and Keane was told post match. Keane observed and was happy to say it in interviews months later that he was surprised to find the medics could find a heart.

Keane lives life by his own rules. He is happy to do things to others that he would castigate others for if they done it for him.

The Walters comment is nothing new.
