Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Some 'interesting' debates going on over there. Definitely not World Service members I'd say ;)

It's a bit mad. Thankfully this thread has stayed - largely - sane, but the OTB thread is a microcosom of how boards seems to be drifting as of late.

There's a lot of really angry posters filling up forums and the subjects and standard of debate can make for pretty grim reading at times. I tend to come away from boards these days feeling a bit depressed and I increasingly wonder if it's worth it. There is so much outraged drivel clogging the place up.

    All off topic, of course.

I agree with you. There are only a limited number of thread I actually visit on boards now. I would never have paid much attention to politics or current affairs thread, but would click on any that piqued my interest occasionally. Nowadays I don't bother as I know I'll just end up feeling annoyed. I honestly wouldn't be enough of a regular to comment on whether boards has always been like that, but to me it seems that in the past year or so there was an infiltration of these type of people, and it has actually brought out the worst in posters who may otherwise have withheld their twisted opinions.

Anyway, we're going way off topic, although I sense the podcast yesterday may have been a good listen to try understand some of the behavior ( I haven't listened yet)

It's the layout. 2 idiots arguing can have a thread top of the most popular boards like after hours for weeks. At this stage boards doesn't want to complete with more popular layouts like reddit because it might as well offer something different. Boards is like Nokia around 2009.
Lots of smaller boards have move to different platforms too. I use the PES board for doing organised leagues and we all moved to discord. It's 100 times better

I'm a member since 2008 though I was a regular visitor prior to that as well. I haven't really contributed a huge amount outside of the specialist forums or specific threads like here. Unfortunately I'd agree with Arghus, the place has become overrun with alt-right, shinner bots and a plethora of other trolling posters. You can generally avoid that by sticking to the specialist forums and threads like this but there has been the occasional poster on this thread who has tried (unsuccessfully i might add which is a credit to the rest of posters) to stoke up some of that alt-right nonsense. Generally coincided with one of Kens politics podcasts.

After Hours and Current affairs have become complete cesspits and I avoid them usually though I do like to read up on the latest shinner outrage or if theres something topical I'll have a read. I find that once a thread is open for over 10+ pages it descends into the same few posters arguing over and over. I noticed recently that the same 10 or less posters are currently having pretty much the same arguement in the "FF/FG/GP government thread" and the "has SF vanished thread". I don't think there is a solution to it really and its shame as AH used to be compulsive reading for me when I was in college.

I find r/ireland is good but theres a significant number of similar posters over there too but the downvotes often takes care of them.

I used to play in the PES league Cienciano, that was a good friendly community so glad to see you are keeping it going even if its outside of boards. I suspect that is what will eventually happen with most of the smaller communities.

I noticed a few times recently Ken invent dialogue between people like a discussion between VAR lads and the the ref in today's pod regarding the arsenal game. In classic football speak. Worth the monthly fee alone :)

Might have done it in the chat with Wilson and MD last day or so too.

Hmmmm...not sure but, as he admitted recently, his brain doesn't function normally in the AM. Isn't that where his dubbing of on-field conversations started?

    Luiz humiliated !!!
I wouldn’t be surprised if Ken is absent tomorrow.

Prediction: Richie Sadler doing the football show tomorrow.

He crossed his fingers amd hoped Arsenal did an Arsenal, which of course they did.

Agree. Especially not with the bluffer Delaney being one of the guys they chose to discuss it with.

    +1

I also found it odd that in addition to UEFA not knowing their own rules, it seems no journalist has read them either..surely some journalist could have spotted the "5 year time bar" rule before all of this went to appeal ?

Isn't it really, really weird that nobody anywhere noticed this?

Nobody in Uefa, none of their lawyers, no journos anywhere?

FFP rules aren't even that old, surely whoever wrote it was paying even a tiny bit of attention to it's most high profile use ever?

Yeah, and that nobody has mentioned it either! It doesn't add up at all, a quick search through the FFP rules online shows the 5 year time limit...

The alleged offences took place between 2012-16 some were within the 5 year window but most took place outside it. I heard on the Athletic podcast(I think) discussing it that they hoped they could show a pattern and the time limit wouldn't matter or something along those lines.
The details only emerged in 2018 so they had to be seen as doing something I think.

I see, seems fairly obvious that UEFA wanted to put up the pretence of punishment and City always knew it was a charade...what's strange is that everyone else took UEFA so seriously ... The likes of Miguel Delaney made it out to be: "A seismic moment in the game ...yada yada"....it seems they didn't have a leg to stand on...

Well, when you say took Uefa seriously, did anybody in the whole world actually think it would happen? The ban I mean.

Has a sh*t footballer ever generated more airtime than James McClean.

My biggest issue with McClean is that he's an absolutely filthy player. Launching into tackles when there's no need, leaving plenty on players after the ball is gone. Probably in a minority here, but I thought that tackle on Milik in the Aviva a few years back was a shocker. Clearly meant to do him. I'm all for a good 50/50 or a tough challenge, but he's just trying to hurt guys.

Probably one of his best games. Totally changed the game when he came on. The poles couldn't handle him. The poles were in complete control beforehand.

If VAR was around then, who knows. He left a marker as they say. Similar with Keane on overmars.

I totally agree with you, he's a dirty player. But I remember that tackle clearly changing the game. The crowd responded to it instantly and Ireland suddenly found more urgency. Can't condone it, but it definitely had an effect.

In general though his lack of brains on the field is usually quite frustrating.

If McClean was any good he would be a legend in fairness. Talks the talk but his talent is nowhere near the level needed to be a key man in the Ireland set up. As bad as this Ireland team is.

I don't deny that. But it is the same discussion that has been had the previous 3,4,5... when the poppy protest or the twitter abuse or whatever arises. This time it was that the culture allows the same discussion again against the backdrop of Black Lives Matter.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,525 ✭✭✭kilns

I think McClean will start to drift out of the Irish consciousness soon as I cant see him being the type of player Kenny likes or could work with based on the fact that he is a very limited player and if Kenny wants to play good football and hold onto the ball he simply cant do that with McClean in the team.

So he may be in squads but he will not get any game time

I'd imagine he likes him quite a bit seeing as he signed him for Derry and played him for 3/4 seasons.
