nobody has still actually given any proof they're politically correct, unless your standards for pc is that they don't do ****ty ladz bantz stuff

I liked Murph when he was doing his country pages routine. That was enough as I needed of his shtick.

But now he is like an anchor on the show.

The last week did it for me.

A muddling interjection too many. Another Simpsons reference passed off as humour. The stilted tone of his voice in most conversations. And the PC stuff on top of it all.

And the PC stuff on top of it all.

OK, but what PC stuff? Can you be a bit more specific?

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,169 ✭✭✭batistuta9

I'm behind, only listening to the deadline day football show now but murph & eoin are nearly encouraging ken to an Italian accent for totti's mother and to tell the 'you shag one sheep' joke.
    Not much PC there.

Wouldn't listen to the other pod regularly so don't hear murph a lot.

The odd time there's an "they're all luvly girls" type feel to it but not something I've noticed recently. Haven't listened to all of them recently.

Doesn't look like we'll get specifics on this cliche though.

Mad Men's Don Draper : What you call love was invented by guys like me, to sell nylons.

When they're talking about controversial things Eoin can sometimes be quite cautious but more in a "let's not get sued" kind of way than a "PC GONE MAD!1!!" kind of way.

No idea what these last few posts have been about.

They're politically correct in the sense that they don't throw around racist or sexist epithets.

And was that even in the podcast?

That says more about the person claiming they are "too PC" than the SecondCaptains themselves.

I think that post is pointing out the kind of poster the person who started this discussion is.

Probably best to forget this issue as it's obviously baseless.

Think they are PC alright~ their coverage of refugees welcome campaign in Germany last year and going back a few years but their position that the SI swimsuit edition was a great wrong would be two examples. They also covered Brexit fairly extensively with one UK reporter coming on to lambast it I think.

Sometimes they should concentrate on reporting on sport and reduce the political agendas

How is any of that being politically correct? They're discussing wider issues in sport and expressing their opinions on them.

Also how is being politically correct a bad thing? If they're lying about how they feel about these issues then you could have a go at them, if they genuinely have a specific opinion that's in line with most rational and educated people then it's not "being PC", it's expressing said opinions.

That's nonsense. A big part of Ken's shtick is that he has free reign to make reference to anything outside the strict confines of "football" and try to tangentially connect it to the sport. I think politics is bound to come up every now and again. Generally speaking, I find that they actually really don't get involved in discussing politics all that much.

As regards the coverage of the refugee issue in Germany this time last year. It was a big talking point in German football at the time, feeding into a wider hot topic in Europe. Seemed reasonable that they should talk about it. I think they gave their honest opinion about it. You would prefer if they said, "Get the gunboats down to The Med"?

Simon Kuper went off the reservation a bit when he came onto talk about Brexit. But he made his name writing about football through a socioeconomic lense, so if you wanted to talk to anyone about how that momentous vote was going to affect football: it would be Simon Kuper. He sort of launched into a rant, but I don't think that's what the boys were aiming for.

They aren't always singing from the same political hymn sheet either. Murph and Ken completely and vehemently disagreed about how to view The 1916 Rising, for example.

And just to confuse us all in the SJW/PC vs Anti-PC bias debate: Don't forget during the summer when Ken, without necessarily condoning such things, did say that, in some ways, he can understand why football fans riot and it kind of seems like it might be fun - at the time, of course. What a decidedly un-right-on opinion to have; he's a scoundrel that Ken!

I'm remembering the lad they had on when Vardy had his record as well who wanted him shunned because he used a racial term for a person in casino.

Ken banged the drum about Chelsea's collapse last season was down to the treatment of Eva caniero in a large way which was a massive stretch. They really emphasized that story beyond its Importance even if Mourinho behaved very badly.

Please God don't let this board descend into yet another argument over whether so-and-so is "too PC" - that crap has ruined half the other radio discussions. You don't have to agree with the SC team on everything to enjoy the show. And if you really can't bring yourself to listen to someone with a different political outlook, there are plenty of other outlets to cater for all persuasions.

Someone they had on wanted Vardy banned for racially abusing someone in a casino and Ken thought the Eva Caniero thing was significant and the point is ? Too pc or...? Strange

Back on point with the shows - I really can't get enough of Andy Lee. They really should have him as a permanent member of team when he does hang up the gloves, he is so engaging in a sport I really do not like. Hope that he does get another chance to fight, it seems he's hampered not be his skills but his bankability, which is a shame.

He was very bankable as a prospect and received a ton of hype and publicity in the states thanks to some highlight reel ko's and his relationship with Emmanuel Steward. He could've been huge and it was all in place for him, but sadly his skills never matched the hype. No shame as he's a fine fighter. Just not elite.

He was really interesting in his interview on An Irishman Abroad a couple of years back.

I think you'll have to download the Irishman Abroad app to listen to it now though. It was episode 20.

I always enjoy when Andy is on, he has such a natural rapport with the boys. He is insightful, and very easy to listen to. I found it hilarious when he said that he had spent a lot of his time since his loss to Saunders hanging out with the boys.

Nice to hear Virgin Media/UPC get a kicking. I sensed many thousands of heads nodding in agreement with my own.
