hi i,ve a brew nearly ready, and was thinking of using some of the brown twist top bottles from the perlenbacher lidl lager. They seem to go back on nice and tight, but i don't know if they're air tight:confused:. anyone used them thanks

My gut feeling is that would be fairly dodgy, but I haven't tried it.

They will work but just be careful. The glass in the twist tops is weaker than the normal capped tops. They can chip when capping/opening. Other than that they are fine.

Do you reuse the same caps or do you put new owns on with a capper?

Capper wont work properly with twist-off necks,as needs to crimp

Be prepared to remove large swathes of skin from your palm and thumb if you try and tighten them all by hand. I have the Ox-Bar bottles from the Coopers kit and end up ripping my hand to bits every time. Wet hands and constant twisting = pain. I can only imagine the metal caps would be even worse.

    Tighten loosely in bulk first.
Then using a tea-towel tighten all properly. No skin lost ;)

You could reuse the same caps but I prefer to use new caps and the same capper that I use for normal bottles.

This comes back to what I was saying about being careful. The capper will cap twist tops, but as tteknulp points out, it does need to crimp and it is at this point where it can chip/break the glass.

Yes i agree ,its too much hassle ,get your mates to collect normal ones or better stil invest in some swing tops ,only €1 each and u can reuse many times ,thats what i use ,have a couple of hundred there excellent.

Do twist tops come in any colour other than clear? I don't remember ever seen green or brown twist tops.

Perlenbacher in Lidl and its equivalent in Aldi are brown glass.

Perlenbacher can be got for less than €1 a bottle sometimes. I saw it in the lidl magazine very recently, there could currently be an offer on, think 6 for €5, might have been 1 day only or coming soon.

I dish out upwards of 100+ swing top bottles a month to Beoir and National Homebrew Club members in the Dublin area. So if you live in Dublin sign up. :P

I recapped a few twist-cap Xingu bottles a while back and broke a few while capping. They did seal adequately but I wouldn't bother with them in future.

Have you tried asking your local specialist beer bar to keep swingtops for you?

That was directed at Herb, who was looking for bottles in Cork. In Cork City I'd be asking in the Bierhaus if they'd keep swingtops aside.
