Few points on the house: It’s in Fairview, not Clontarf. The accepted border was always the railway line.

People also say Bram Stoker was from Clontarf even though his house was on Marino Crescent.

this was a very wierd eposode
very little shown of the house and owner at the start
very little from the builder at any time, no major showing of who he was
    builder not at party
any of the suppliers wernt advertised or promoted (who made the windows, supplied the brick , and all we got about the kitchen was that buster was building it)
    no final figures shown
a lot of qs being shown.

there is a huge story behind the scenes here

I've just watched last week's episode on the player. I had seen a few comments from the thread but didn't want to read in advance of seeing the programme.

I'm guessing my reaction will probably be waaaay out of kilter with the general concensus (although I hope not) - I thought it, they, the house, their attitudes, the whole lot, were just brilliant! The programme left a smile on my face (which is unusual enough for RTI).

How fantastic to see someone who clearly worked hard and earned shedloads of money, use that money to create their dream. And what a dream. Wow. Beautiful original house, which they kept intact but made usable, and then the new parts were amazing.

Like this week's episode, frustrating that they didn't give a final figure for the build - I'm guessing it was fairly stratospheric but clearly worth it to them.

    And cuddliest, loveliest builder EVER.

Best RTI of all time! Up there with Sarah-Jane and her mammy :D

How is her age relevant though?

Not relevant to the build but relevant I think to the discussion here given that so many have commented on her appearance.

Plus I was attempting to give her a compliment with all the slagging she's getting here.

I actually think the builder was at the party, jsut not interviewed, there is a 1sec scene where the do the talky bit at the end where dermot, the ds and a man are 'socialising' inside by the window seat but the reflection makes it hard to be 100% sure its him but he looks very similar to the builder that was shown a few times in the episode

Boards is gas. Hopefully next week they'll be putting a new carpet and a couch in a 3 bed semi. Keep people happy. If they have the money to invest in their house in their local town fair play to them. Obviously they did very well from the sale of the business.

Not worth following the thread after the posts in this thread.

Above quotes are re last week's episode - have to say I'm inclined to agree.

Did I not see Rationel windows going into this week's house? (I was surprised as it's usually Munster)

I agree loved the couple last week, they really built there dream house and got what they wanted.
I found this week's a bit odd, they didn't seem to get on at all, Dermot and the lady both a bit painful. Wasn't overly impressed with the end result.

Munster Joinery usually provide the windows & doors on these room to improve builds. Not hand crafted like what was the preference last nite, but they do the job to meet the spec required. I think each build should specify the BER rating achieved at the end.

A programme showing renovations focusing on energy systems, window types, plumbing, electrics, kitchens & landscaping would do well.

Fair enough. I'd watch it back as I'm fairly sure I did see Rationel at some point - but I'd be afraid I'd put a brick through the telly!

The big glass wall/door at the back did arrive separately.
Maybe mj just did the sash windows.

It seems like she either costed it with the most optimistic mindset possible, or just didn't cost it at all and presumed that she could point the architect at a wishlist and a budget and have him "find a solution".

    What’s wrong with that?

I bet she agreed to start with about 5-10 of the original requests and that agreement was edited out. Fact is this show is becoming more reality/conflict based and the editing reflects that, and it works because here we are discussing it. I mean I generally watch nothing but sport on the Irish channels.

I do like renovation shows though. Room to improve gets a bit of added spice with the architect being a protagonist and the clients the antagonist - at least until it’s all resolved in the end. And it is all resolved in the show even if there are court cases later. And there has been more than one court case.

A huge number of grand design programmes I’ve watched recently were self builds or self project managed. That’s how they get their drama in that show since that will eventually go tits up mid build but will work out in the end - even if the end is years later and 50% over budget. GD plans long term.

GD is the better show for architectural enthusiasts though but the three most recent RTI have all been as, or more interesting, I mean you are not going to get a meeting with an architect in a jacuzzi on grand designs.

The new George Clarke show "Ugly house to lovely house" shows you everything where Room to improve fails you. They do get different architects, they don't have massive poles up their ar5es, they work WITH the client to come to a lovely end result. And George Clarke, who is a gent.

    IT must pay well.

She has a flat that she bought at the height of the boom, paid 435 k for the house and about 160 k on top of that for the build.

I would have to agree, she is single and has done well on her own. After spending that kind of money, approx 635K, I would be inclined to sell that apartment while property prices are quite high now, the IT job may not always be there. Getting the house for 435K was not that bad. In reality that is a 3 bed house, bathroom on the mezz level.

What channel is this on? I've seen a couple of mentions of it, sounds very interesting!

Although do i really need yet another series to follow???

I just watched the Sussex bungalow programme and the result was fabulous. Loved the architect (Carl Turner) - very innovative architect.

Yeah I thought I wouldn't like last week's from comments here but they seemed decent people who had worked hard and wanted their rewards!

    Fair play to them!

I thought the same, could make out the badge on the steering wheel i thought, and the leather interior and headrest looked merc to me.

Volvo badge on the wheel, Swedish flag label on the seats.

Season 14 Episode 9, Kevin shared a Japanese bathing tub with the couple who built the Japanese inspired forest house.

That's not fair on the client.
    You've researched the costs.
    She didn't.
She hired someone to do that for her.
Did she? We didn't hear anything about that in the programme? She simply turned up with a wishlist, a budget plucked out of the air and expected Dermot and the builders to "find a solution".

It doesn't take much effort to get a basic idea of costings a few years out from your project, mine would be from a trip to an Ideal Homes exhibition where I spoke to a few of the glazers because I know it's something we intend to do to our house in the long-term but you could achieve a similar "rough" feel for the costs of most aspects of a project from googling or even here on boards.ie.

Not having some sort of idea of how much things cost in a renovation project is childishly naieve and makes you look like a moron if you then do that renovation as part of a Television programme.

It wasn't mentioned but I wonder how much of the wishlist are things that she wants but didn't necessarily need now. Something like the electronic gates seems like the kind of thing that you put on a wishlist but are willing to drop off for now. But at the same time you say that I will get them in a couple of years so please make sure that the design can allow for an upgrade to them later.
