I think a house of that style, of that age in Ireland is unusual - the wood frame and shingles would not have been standard when it was originally built.

I love the idea of a mezzanine! I don't know how practical they are when it comes to minimising sound travel but I think it will look great. Forget the rule "form follows function".

I've stayed places with mezzanines a few times. As a bedroom they're a disaster. They'll do for a night or two on holiday, but long term they'd drive you crazy. There's no privacy. Where I've seen them work really well is as a library, or a part time office.
