Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Veg Growing

I have some questions on veg growing in the back garden. Please post any ideas, tips ect on the following.

    1) when growing veg in cell trays with PEAT MOSS, do the seeds need extra feeding such as fertilizer added or will they grow successfully with the nutrients in the peat moss. this is just ordinary, cheap peat moss. 7 euro per 200L.

The veg a sow are many varieties of carrots. parsnips and turnip.

    2) Do i need to put down slug pellets when i sow the seed direct into the ground after the seed is placed in the ground without germinating. Anyone know anything about slug pellet application.?

    3) do i need to do the same thing with question two when i have plastic over the veg?

    4) When i sowed my first lot of seeds they went direct into the ground without plastic, i now have about 10 square metres of weeds... GREAT  ........ hoed it but it seem none of the seeds came up. i know seeds from weeds.

    5) does anyone have any ideas on growing swedes?? i grew some in cell trays and they died. seems to be ate one some pest/disease. would i need to put slug pellets on the trays also.

Any tips are seriously appreciated for reading the replying :)
I have a good set up and take care of plants very well. But it seems some little things like the above i will have to leave to the more experienced and would be delighted to learn :)

    Hey hort
On 1/ I would not add fert as it would burn small seedlings, no need until they have a decent bit of growth, hardened off and growing well in the garden, chicken pellets are great dispersed on your beds a week or so before planting.

2/you will when the slugs are eating little seedlings as they emerge( there is organic pellets available), beer traps work well also.

    3/ yeah you will

4/Ideally let the weeds germinate first, hoe them off and then you will have a clean bed to so your veg seeds.

5/ now is a good time to sow swedes, sow thinly in pre watered drills half an inch deep, in rows 16 in apart, as they grow, gradually, keeping the stronger ones, thin seedlings to about 6 in apart, net all brassicas from the cabbage white butterfly!
Turnip can be sow earlier in the season, purple top milan is a lovely variety

Carrot and more so parsnip seeds take awhile to germinate, patience an observation i think are key.

    Hope this helps

I would stay away from PEAT MOSS.. and try RockWool. had 100% rate with that, just make sure the Ph Level is right for the seeds..

For a Good Soil i would use Loam which is 40-40-20% Sand Silt and Clay...

For germinate your Loam needs to have a High Level of nitrogen if you know any one that keeps Racing pigeons them their you go pigeon and Bat Sh**t is one of the best source of nitrogen that you can give any Soil..

If you want easy and fast growing i would Recommend hydroponic systems they dont use Soil just clay pellets..

if you want i could give you a Step by Step guide to make your Own Hydroponic System, Since i went Hydro i never looked back..

If you are growing out Doors, or in a green house, i would start looking in the Garden from time to time for some Lady Bugs and start collection them, you will need them if your Green house becomes under Attack from White Spiders..

slug pellet application they are ok, but make sure you give your leaves a good clean when you pick them before eating them. but to stop slugs i would use raised bed

    Hi hort
Tap rooting veg like carrots and parsnip, sow in the ground, in a module you ll end up with a pigs tail like veg:)
Just be gentle when transplanting others to the ground, and make sure to harden them off for a 7/10 days before planting out.

keeping your modules up off the ground on a table and there should be no need for slug pellets.
Pellets tend to dissolve after a shower or two of rain and need to be re applied.

The only bugs i have to worry about with swedes are the cabbage white butterfly and their eggs that turn into voracious caterpillars, cover them down neatly with fine netting and they ll be safe

veg that i have put in the ground already from the greenhouse, cabbage, cauliflower, peas( sown in pieces of gutter about 4 ft long) broad beans, turnip.

At the moment in the greenhouse i have lettuce, beetroot, runner and french beans, courgette, cucumber, brussels, tomatoes

Veg i have sowed direct are leeks, paris silver skin, onions sets, garlic, turnips, lettuce, Carrots(few varieties) parsnip, early spuds, broad beans, swedes went in yesterday

If you have some access to old bits of copper( i cut an old cylinder up into strips) and surround the most young and tender seedlings, slugs wont cross the copper, the get a mild shock, really helps until seedlings get some growth
    on, better chance of survival.
