Self Catering dog friendly recommendations - near a beach?!

    Hi,

Just wondering if anyone can recommend or direct me towards some good self catering accommodation preferably in Donegal but maybe Galway/Mayo also that allows dogs - we have 2.

I was looking at houses online around Rossnowlagh so that we would be close to the beach to bring the dogs for walks a few times daily as they love the beach. the main problem I'm having is that alot of the accommodation is massive - houses that sleep 7-10 people mainly....nothing normal size. We would only need somewhere that sleeps 4 people maximum.

Any help or reccommendation would be great?

PM sent as I'm not sure of forum policy on linking to a commercial holiday rental site.

It's okay to link to businesses that you can recommend personally. The only restrictions are on links to rescues, and links to donedeal or its ilk.
So, link away to holiday homes you can recommend!

I don't have any recommendations for the area you're interested in, but don't be put off if a property is listed as sleeping 7-10 people. They are often normal sized houses but with 3 beds in some of the rooms. I stayed in a little cottage on Valentia Island last year that slept 7 - it had 2 double bedrooms and a third room with 3 beds.

In case anyone is interested - http://www.valentiaislandcottages.com. They're all pet friendly and all owned by the same local woman who was very welcoming to my two dogs.

    In that case :D

Have used this lot http://www.sykescottages.co.uk/pet-friendly-cottages.html many, many times over the years and have nothing but praise for them.

We have been everywhere from a cottage on it's own 40 acre island off Westport with an old dog and a 2 year old to a thatched cottage in Tipp with 4 dogs (yes- 4) and two under 5's.

It allows you to refine your search to choose pet friendly, near whatever you want it to be near, yes/no smoking, open fire, number of bedrooms, etc etc.

The one 'annoying' thing is it doesn't allow for a specific search for more than 1 pet

I've been lucky enough to stay with my fido in Irish Landmark Properties & I have to say they are FaaanTASTIC - couldn't recommend the organisation enough. You are better off ringing them to make a booking as they can be flexible if you chat to them & make suggestions you may not have thought of otherwise. Their website is a bit slow as you have to keep going back to the HP to search again but their properties are little gems : ) not all take dogs thou.

I also stayed in the house in the grounds of a b&b way off past Galway city called the Station House. There was a big wild bog - no sheep - with big lakes & a river over the fence & fido had a ball - it was huge - she ran and swam for hours in total solitude & had a ball. Bit quiet for me!!!!luckily the weather for the first days was amazing so I picnicked & had some wino while fido ran amuck! I thought I was booking Galway not outside Oughterard so it was a bit of a different quiet Holliday for me!!!

Just recently booked ourselves so have been doing a lot of searching - these two were on our shortlist - I cannot give you any recommendation but if the photos are anything to go by...

    http://www.donegalcottageholidays.com/grandas
    http://www.donegalcottageholidays.com/cloverfield

We ended up booking this one as we wanted to be nearer Sligo - we have ended up with a huge house but we got it at a good price as there are only two humans - the lady has no problem with us bringing 2 dogs, she has 3 herself!

In the process of booking one of these now for a peaceful (rain lashed and wind swept???) New Year.

Just me, OH and the three dogs rambling around Valencia in our waterproofs. Heaven. :D.

    Thanks for the link bluecherry!!!

You're welcome. :) I stayed in Sea View. It's at the end of a narrow 1km lane right in the middle of the island, far away from people and cars and totally safe for the dogs. An added bonus is that the landlady also owns the field across from the cottage, and since it was empty at the time she gave me permission to walk the dogs in it.

Am booking Birds 1 as there are only two humans.

Do you know anything about where it is located (I have a 'thing' about extensively researching where I am going...:o) ?

I imagine there won't be many 'holiday makers' there in the dead of winter...

I'm not completely sure, but I think it might be these two cottages:

    https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=200255327879266637044.0004dc46f125be9bdf7a1&msa=0&ll=51.915123,-10.331987&spn=0.004732,0.011362

They're near Chapeltown Village, which has absolutely nothing in it bar a pub, which may or may not be open. Knightstown is the main "town" on the island and it's about a 5 minute drive. There's a hotel that does decent food and another pub or two. I was there in October and it was very quiet. A lot of places were closed up for the winter, but to be honest that's how I like it.

Portmagee is just a 5 minute drive in the other direction, over the bridge and onto the main land. There's a pub there that does fabulous food. They have an outdoor seating area and were more than happy to let me have the dogs with me there (same for the hotel in Knightstown). Not sure how you feel about sitting outside in December though. :D

We stayed in "Dustys place" in Donegal last year and had a great time. Close to the beach but not within easy walking distance. Maybe 15 mins in the car. VERY dog friendly.

Have a look at the other end

    Not Donegal, but Cork !

    Just outside Timoleague village.

www.argideenlodges.info is owned and run by Tim Severin, the writer & explorer. Great location in West Cork & close to beaches in Timoleague & Courtmacsherry. Really, really dog friendly.

Quilty Holiday Cottages on the coast in County Clare: Two minutes to Spanish Point, five minutes to Seafield (great, quiet beach for walking dogs!)

It's my turn to thank you - I've just booked myself a week in Doolin in October using Skye Cottages. :)

Can anyone advise me of a good hotel/B&B or self catering accommodation in the south east preferably but I would consider anywhere in Ireland that I can bring my dog with me if I go away for a weekend. I have searched pet friendly hotels. I have found that they dont cater to my needs which are somewhere for my dog to sleep at night. I dont want to have her sleeping in the bedroom because I would be afraid if she barked during the night she would disturb other guests. I'd like to be able to stay somewhere that would house the dog from say 8pm until 8am and then I could enjoy my break away with her and go for nice long walks during the day. I have come across one place in Mallow but the price was way out of my league for eg 200 euro per night.

I don't have any recommendations for the area you're interested in, but don't be put off if a property is listed as sleeping 7-10 people.

Houses that sleep 7-10 people tend to be more expensive than houses sleeping 2/4, though. Simply because the owner figures that more people means more to share the cost of the house.

Unfortunately most of the houses that I am coming across and the ones that I like are the ones that unfortunately sleep 7-10 poeople and so far the owners haven't been willing to negotiate on price due to numbers staying even though it will be me and two dogs for most of a week and then maybe 2 more joining me at the weekend....I'll keep trying until I get somewhere smaller or affordable!!

I'm kind of in the same boat. OH and I are trying to plan holidays, but most of the houses for rent are much too big, and therefore too expensive, for just the two of us, and the dogs, particularly in high season. We're now trying to think of anyone we know with a house somewhere nice, who wouldn't mind us moving in while they went on holiday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 838 ✭✭✭bluecherry74

Maybe I've just been lucky. The last place I booked knocked €100 of the weeks rent because it was just me (plus 2 dogs). It was off-season though, so perhaps that's why.

I'm looking for a dog friendly camping spot. We do have a few we go to, but all have good facilities and are pretty popular. We're hoping to go on the bank holiday weekend, so popular places will be too packed.

We don't care about the facilities at all, we're just hoping for a spot to get away from it all. Preferably in the East or South East.

If anybody could recommend somewhere that'd be great.

EDIT: Or someone with a mobile home who would rent it to people with 2 dogs - dogs must be allowed inside.

I know of 2 camp sites in the Glen of Aherlow, Co. Tipperary. The Glen was recently voted in the top 5 places to holiday in Ireland, http://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/travel/ireland/best-place-to-holiday/best-place-to-holiday-in-ireland-judges-choose-the-final-five-1.1399427. Both have plenty of forest walks on their doorstep. I am not sure about their policy regarding dogs but like a lot of places the are "dog friendly" but for some reason may prefer not to advertise it.

    http://www.camping.ie/ Ballinacourty House and
http://www.camping-ireland.ie/parks/tipperary/39-glen-of-aherlow-caravan-a-camping-park.html is for Glen of Aherlow park (their website is very slow to load)

Does anyone know of any hotels near the RDS in Dublin that would allow cats to stay in the room?

Just to added, I've previously stayed in this cottage in Donegal and it was great.
