Annual spend on alcohol

Can anyone direct me to figures on the annual Irish spend on alcohol? I've come across an article that says we spend "€2,000 each", but it doesn't quantify this - is this per adult or per person. Is there an overall figure for the whole population?

You mean this, from within that PDF?

"The CSO estimate of alcohol personal expenditure was €6.1282 billion in 2010. This suggests an expenditure level in 2011 of €6.0914 billion."

There are various breakdowns in that PDF. Volume of alcohol per person, sales per sector and overall sales within Ireland for that period. If you root around on the CSO website you can probably get more numbers. Depending on what you need, you can just say 6 billion Euro spent per year or something more detailed.

According to household budget survey in 2010 it was €39 per week. €39 * 52 =€2028 so your figures are right. But this is for households and not individuals. Plus Ireland has the highest levels from absenteeism from alcohol in Europe at roughly 25% of the Irish population not drinking alcohol

http://www.cso.ie/en/media/csoie/releasespublications/documents/housing/2010/0910first.pdf over 5,000 household so its quite a large sample

Thanks, nesf and hfallada; it seems, all right that we (through our government) spend €8bn on all education from primary through third level, and (through our household budgets) €6bn on alcohol.

    Unsurprising.
