I have seen a few tv chefs making ice cream with no maker in the last year. I think Nigella Lawson and the baker woman Mary Berry. I think both did it differently to the usual time consuming way of making it with no icecream maker, they were folding in whipped egg whites so I don't think they even had to repeatedly take it out of the freezer to mix air into it. Think it was a single mix & freeze method.

Just incase you don't want more gadgets cluttering your kitchen, thats what put me off ice cream makers. And the fact I would feel the need to use it a lot and eat too much!

I got one in Lidl last year (first week of June I think) for something in the region of 20-30 euro, was impressed to be honest. Have used more expensive 'freeze the bowl' models and found no difference in ease of use or quality of ice cream, although the clear plastic lid is slightly lighter (i.e. more breakable!) than others I've used. The ones that work without having to freeze the bowl are the business but sooo expensive! If you're planning to make a lot of ice cream it would be worth looking out for a model for which you can by a spare bowl.
