Website dilemma

    Hi guys...

I'm researching the pro's/con's of having a designer build a website v's setting one up myself using Wordpress & Themeforest.

    It's a small start-up company (services) w/a tight budget.

    The options I'm considering are:
    • Saving, waiting and hiring a designer to build the type of site I would like. But this means I may loose clients and loose ground to my competitors.
    • Building a site myself (.ie domain name established), organising hosting, installing Wordpress, picking a theme from Themeforest, tweaking the theme and installing the necessary Wordpress extensions. This option (if it works) enables me to enter the market place, but I won't have all the bells and whistles I would like.
Have you any experience of the second option (good/bad?).

    All help/advice is appreciated.....

    A.

I think the majority of people who frequent here do this stuff for a living - I'd suggest posting in a more general SME forum for getting less partial feedback in hiring web devs/designers.

Just to add into the pros & cons though: if you're bad at doing the design, your business can come across as more amateur than if you hire a pro.

On the other hand, if its a start-up, you may want to see te feasibility first before investing & a good idea can still be tested with a free WP theme - look at Twitter when it launched, not exactly slick! But the idea saw them through.

Go for option B now and revisit option A down the road when your business is better established and your cash flow allows for it.

What bells and whistles would you be missing?
