I thought about buying a Magpul PDR, but heard a lot of troubles about it.

seems like it needs some upgrades before it will be reliable, and with an good amount of rate of fire.

which upgrades would you guys recommend?

As Stigmau5 has said it is grand from new, I'm just too fussy.
With a battery that fits it was just a bit too slow for me and I found the standard hop rubber to be a bit on the hard side.

Are they worth it?? That is a tough question.

For me it is worth it simply because I wanted one.
But to be honest all Magpul products are a little overpriced, especially the Masadas and PDR's.

But if you really like the look and feel of it, then yes it is:)
