    Car related query...

Have any of you brought your Irish car over and registered it in the Uk when you moved to London?

Just wondering is there much hassle involved?

I've bought my last couple of cars from the Uk so I know there is great value to be had buying over there but my current car is an 03 and wouldn't be worth a great deal if I sell it here plus all our money will be going towards rent and initial set up costs in London.

Before I'm asked I won't be commuting to the city for work and will need a car for a round trip to work which isn't serviced by a direct bus or train which I've already researched plus I want to be able to drive as I have family and friends in other parts of the country I'd like to be able to visit etc amongst various other reasons.

Just wondering does it take long to register in order to be able to tax and insure? Thanks

I've never done it but as it's an intra EU transfer and your 2003 car will gave a speedo in mph, it shouldn't be too difficult. See here for the official advice. https://www.gov.uk/importing-vehicles-into-the-uk/registering-an-imported-vehicle

If your car was first registered outside the EU (such as a secondhand Japanese import), it might be more difficult.

Remember that your Irish insurance continues to cover you for the legal minimum insurance (third party) until it expires. Any additional coverage (fire& theft, "comprehensive") might be limited to a 30 or 90 day period. Some insurers will recognise an Irish no claims bonus, the main issue will be an effective new arrivals premium cost. No UK credit or residence history will mean a higher risk for some insurers.

Its a right pain in the arse. I wouldnt recomend it. You have to have so much paper work done for them. Unlike the Irish where you give them your VRT money and they are happy over here its all about the paper work.

The car will be half what you think its worth over here too and your car insurance will be more as they see it as a import.

Sell your car in Ireland and buy one over here if you can.

I brought mine over, intending to register it. Gave up and took it back. It is an absolute pain. Another consideration is where to park it whilst going through a registration process. You can't get a permit for an overseas car, at least in my borough, and pretty much everywhere in London is permit parking.

Some good advice there thank you.

Rereading your op, was it a UK car originally? If yes, I think the process is even simpler and you get back the original reg. selling and buying a replacement will cost money even to stay with an equivalent car.

    Sorry just seeing this now.

Yes I brought the car in from the Uk 2 years ago and I have all the original paperwork etc.

Perhaps it would be best to hold onto it so, bring it over, register it and if I choose to sell there might be the opportunity to save a few quid if the garage takes part exchange etc.

You're much better off selling the car outright then going to a garage with cash. Garages generally give very poor part-ex values, and depending on what car it is, if it's an 03 it could be worth almost nothing to the trade.

    Cool thanks.

My current insurance policy isn't up til the new year. And my tax is covered til xmas.

If we were to move over in the next few months, could I bring the car over and drive on the Irish plate for a while covered by my current policy until I get it registered over there with the dvla and get the new registration plates plus UK tax & insurance?

Once registered I'd then be able to sell the car if I wished to. If stopped I suppose I would say I'm just on holidays with the car or have just moved over and am in the process of registering it in the Uk which would be true as I'd start the process immediately.

Ideally I'd sell the car here before moving but I'm going to need the car for work commute purposes and general usage and if I sell here it means we're carless until I buy a new motor in the Uk and we'll need it for moving stuff aswell although I know we could hire a van or removal company but that's costly and it still means we'd be without the car for a while.

Your Irish insurance would cover you for 90 days.

The cops over here have ANPR every where. They would know when you arrived in the UK to check if your on holiday or not.

As you paid VRT the car is worth more in Ireland.

I brought over my car when I got here first worth about 5k in Ireland I traded it in for £1200.

I also didn't listen to everyone when they said sell it in Ireland wish I did now!

Anybody know if you can fill a republic of ireland prescription over here as a private prescription?

You can use ROI prescriptions in the UK. Generally much cheaper too. There is a thread on boards about if you do a search

    Hi everyone,

Just a quick question, does anybody know that if I was unemployed in Ireland for 4 weeks before I relocated to London, is it true that I would be entitled to 13 weeks social welfare

yes you can, i filled a few irish prescriptions over here when i moved.

you won't be able to get the tablets on the nhs so will have to pay for them but in my experience it is much cheaper then ireland anyway 92euro vs 23pound

your english GP should be able to give you an NHS script if you show them the irish scripts. would save you more again.

It's pretty specialist and requires regular blood work so I'm not sure if that would work but I'll give it a try. Thanks

Just wondering if anyone has advice on moving costs.

One big van could take all our stuff as we don't have to move any large furniture or anything major but self-hire and driving seems unrealistic due to the costs involved.

We had a look on Shiply and quotes were coming in for around the £500stg region approx.

Just wondering if anyone has used anyone who might have been significantly cheaper who was reliable.

    Thanks.

Anyone have any recommendations about where's the best place to get west end tickets? I've a friend coming over for a few days who wants to see the lion king and i'm just looking for the best deal!

  • Registered Users Posts: 657 ✭✭✭exiledelbows

Go into the theatre on the day or the day before and ask them. That way there's no middleman and no commission. The TKTS booth in Leicester Square is probably your best bet otherwise, though I've never used it and you'll probably have to queue.

Any of the outlets that litter Leicester Square/Picadilly Circus will give you as good a price as you'll get I've found. Once demand is gone down on any show you'll get good value in one of them.

You do run the risk of missing out on tickets for a particular show by leaving it until that day though. This is probably more likely if it's a weekend date.

I find it's worth just buying the tickets through the official channels if you've got your hear set of a particular show. If you just want a night out in the West End then wandering up to those stalls and picking what's on offer is a great option too.

If you show up to Book of Mormon on the evening of the performance, there's a raffle for cheap tickets, but you might not get them.

    Hi folks,

Moved down from Manchester to London with my girlfriend and we're looking for a double room in a shared house to get us started. We've been all over gumtree and spareroom but just wondering if there's any other good websites or resources to find somewhere that I've missed.

We're currently staying at my cousin's and we both have jobs starting in the coming weeks. Rooms seem to get snapped up very quickly here so just wondering if there's any other options out there.

    Thanks!
