Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I'd love to know how long the surname 'Cloake' has been in Ireland for.
From looking at Griffiths Valuation I know that Cloakes have been in Ireland since at least the 1800's, but they probably arrived before the 1800's.

If anyone knows how long the Cloakes have been in Ireland, I'd appreciate if you let me know.

I think that you may have a lot of difficulty in finding a date for the first Mr. Cloake came and settled in Ireland. Google suggests that the first written record of a Cloake was from about 1279. For all you know 'they' came to Ireland anytime from then onward.

If you put a gun to my head and I had to take a guess I'd say that the name in English and not Norman so unlikely that 'they' came over in 1171. I couldn't find any Cromwellian soldiers with that name and no landowners in 1671 with that name so either 'they' were already in Ireland (earlier plantations) or they came later. The two islands are so close and there was so much traffic between them that it's very difficult to put a date to a move unless your family were noble or important in a way that would have justified the recording of their travel.

How about you trace your family back and see where it goes? For all you know you have an English g-greatfather and your Cloakes are more recent then the ones that you found in the Griffiths Valuations.

The earliest Cloake listed in the Ireland, Births and Baptisms, 1620-1911 records is Emily Jane Cloake, born 1866 in Limerick
The earliest Cloake listed in the Ireland, Tithe Applotment Books, 1823-1837 records is Richard Cloake 1833 in Wexford

    Hi Annwlida,

had a quick look for some Cloakes for you.

the earliest I could find is a marriage for a Cloak in 1759

and the earliest birth was 1802

the only problem with the Irish Genealogy site is that they don't have the all the records available yet

    Enda
