A case of almost unspeakable child abuse has emerged from China. (Warning: this story contains content some may find distressing.)

An 11-year-old girl was found walking on a road in the town of Shichang in China's southwestern Guizhou Province on May 8.

According to local news reports, the girl was talking to herself and occasionally shouting abuse at passers-by.

A man, named locally as Mr Fu, approached the young girl and discovered she had scars all over her body. On her scalp were scalded patches. She was missing much of her hair.

Other villagers then told Mr Fu that the girl's name was Xiao Li. They admitted that they knew she was the victim of abuse by her father, a man they named only as Yang.

Mr Fu called the police, who quickly arrested Yang. Only then was the full horror subjected upon Xiao Li revealed.

The 11-year-old's mouth had been stitched up with fishing cord, her head had been dipped in boiling water, her skin had been pierced with sewing needles, she had been forced to kneel on a floor covered with broken glass and she had been hung upside down and beaten with ropes and sticks.

Photographs taken of Xiao Li in hospital this week showed fresh wounds on her knees, and older scars all over her body.

Doctors say the hair on her head is unlikely ever to grow back because of the abnormal temperatures her scalp has been subjected to.

Although she is 11, she looks much younger, suggesting that she has been malnourished for most or all of her life.

The long list of abuses was established through a combination of medical examinations and police interviews with her father, who is said to have admitted his crimes.

According to an interview given by the girl’s grandmother, Xiao Li's parents left home shortly after she was born to find work elsewhere in China.

For five years, Xiao Li was looked after by her grandparents. Her father then returned and the abuse began.

In the interview, the grandmother claimed that she knew about the abuse but could do nothing to stop it. She said that Xiao Li's father - her son - abused her too.

"He sometimes even beat me along with her, using tobacco stems hitting my back, hitting my head with pot lids," she was quoted as saying.

On occasion, Xiao Li would flee her father's house and attempt to seek some safety in her grandmother's house. Her father would chase her and beat her again. The grandmother was unable to explain why her son was so abusive.

It has emerged that the police had been aware of at least one incident of abuse by Yang in October last year.

Villagers had reported an incident in which the young girl's head was dipped into boiling water.

The police questioned Yang, who claimed that he had put her head into a pot of boiling water in an attempt to rid her of head lice. The police had ordered Yang to take her to hospital, but the matter was not pursued.

Sky News has been unable establish what role Xiao Li's mother played in her upbringing.

Xiao Li is now recovering in hospital. The costs of her medical care have been waived and the local authorities claim to be organising an extensive programme of psychological treatment.

Chen Yuefang, a local government official, said they are now seeking guardians to look after Xiao Li for the remainder of her childhood because her grandparents are too elderly to do so.

Mr Chen also pledged that checks would be made on all children in the town to ensure such an incident is not repeated.

What the hell is wrong with people that theyl turn a blind eye to that? The grandmother should go to prison too and the mother. I dont care if they were afraid of him. They dont have scars all over there body so they obviously never tried hard enough to protect her. It makes me sick

The bystander effect really irks me when I see stories like this. A defenceless child was being systematically abused day in day out and not one person did anything about it. I hope they hang their collective heads in shame.

It's very sad.
But I suppose it's all a product of socialism. The communists have spent the last 60 odd years brutalising and torturing people in china so by now most people are completely desensitised to this level of cruelty. Hence the "so what" attitude of the granny. Par for the course in communist countries. North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela are all the same.
Same again when that toddler got rolled over by a van a few years ago and lay in the road for ages and no-one gave a shít and just walked around her.
The people are utterly brainwashed at this stage and there is little apetite for change. We in western Europe don't know how lucky we are to have escaped the poisonous tentacles of socialism.

I think it's because people who help passersby or randomly injured strangers get sued for it over there. Successfully! Because "why would you help if you didn't do it yourself"

People are generally so selfish there that it makes sense to apply this kind of logic to people who help?

Certainly not a "great bunch of lads" savagery is altogether too common in China. Life is cheap there

God that's horrible.:( I read of a story in the Irish Times magazine last week about a seven year old girl in Britain who was keep as a slave after she was brought over from Romania by a Romanian 'gangsters'. It was so hard to read. The things the girl had been put through and her mother thinking she had a better life over in Britain as this husband and wife said they'd take care of her.:( How can some people be so devoid of any emotion and be so cruel to another human being? I'm not one for the death penalty or torturing people, but these types of people would make you think differently.:mad:

He stitched her mouth shut???? How in the name of christ can anyone justify that? Some of this could be attributed to rage or something but to actually hold down a child and pierce their lips multiple times is the sign of a sick sick mind.

Look at the Dalkey case, the clones report, Brendan smyth and the ryan report. Look at how many reports were ignored. I don't want to come across as a troll for mentioning this. I'm just painting the plight that some vunerable people in this country face. It's these people that should be the priority of the social welfare and not people looking to upgrade houses ect.

Reading cases like that as an agnostic make me momentarily pine for a vengeful God, that man will probably die horribly though sooner,but the destruction he has visited upon that poor child will last longer and be more painful.


unfortunately, I had just finished reading about parents convicted today for "performing an exorcism" on their 9 year old daughter here in Sweden.

Tragic.It isn't co-incidence that these cases mostly seem to involve young girls.

When I read articles like that, being a father of a little girl, my thoughts always turn to how I would feel if my princess was ever subjected to anything like that.

There are no words to convey the horror I feel for that little girl. How any person could subject a child to that kind of horror defies belief, and if I ever came across anything like that, I think I would find it very difficult not to put the perpetrator through an ordeal that would make any horror he could inflict seem minuscule.

Any person that harms a child, does not deserve mercy. They deserve death, as slowly and as painfully as is possible.
