If you buy a new one in the shop.

We've a broken hoover, thats no good and need a new one. Heard somewhere once that they have to take back the old one. If so, do shops charge for the old one?

No, they will take back the old appliance for free because they are obliged to do so under the recycling regulations. Typically in a branch of Power City there is a big wire skip just inside the store to receive old goods. It's inside because if it was outside there would be all sorts of junk getting dumped into it.

Leave the old appliance in the car so you're not lugging it into every store that you visit, then when you're at the cash register paying for your new appliance, ask them where their recycling bin is located because you want to leave off your old hoover, they will tell you where to drop it. Its standard routine in all electrical shops and for the big appliances that they deliver like ovens and fridges, the delivery truck will take away the old appliance - no charge.

Actually there is a charge - it's built-in to the price of the new appliance so what you pay for your new appliance includes the price of recycling it when it packs up. On the price sticker you may see it as 'PRF' - Producer Recycling Fund - it's included in the sell price.
