What age group are the Ulster schools?

    U18 or U19's?
All schools competitions are under 19s.
Ulster Schools interpro side is Under 18. At Under 19 interpro sides are mix of schools and youths players

Blackrock win 14-10 after Belvo score with minutes to go. Double number 25.

    The school's 7th double-double.

I'd say Inst and Methody would hold their own against the Leinster schools over a period of time, the Leinster Schools would certainly win any all Ireland cup more often than not but I don't think they'd win every year.

From what I've heard it appears Belvo were immense in defence.

Looks highly unlikely anyway - Blackrocks current crop of 5th years are poor enough I hear. Although the 2nd years are likely favourites for the J
    again next year

Terenure are meant to have a good junior team next year. Well done to Rock.

Yeah huge number of 2nd years on the Nure team this year. Roughly 10 or so?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,405 ✭✭✭FrannoFan

Rock will nearly always be favorites for the Junior Cup. Most schools struggle to close the big gap in skills in 3 years. Clongowes rarely feature at J's but are always strong by Seniors.

A 2nd year of heartbreak for Belvo. Rock were very good, the back line in particular looked slick. Belvo defense was good, though letting in the 2nd try was due to some poor missed tackles. Belvo squandered a lot of possession and overlaps on the 2nd half could really have spoiled Rock's day but for a tendency to eat up their own space with the drift.

As a venue Tallaght was fairly shocking, only 2 turnstiles open meant waiting half an hour to get into the stadium. No atmosphere about the place either - shocking venue for a match and a huge mistake on the part of the Branch which will hopefully never be repeated.

    Make up:

    Munster 4-Rockwell 2/PBC 1/Crescent 1
    Ulster 2-Wallace 1/Campbell 1

Two from Ulster isn't great, although a lot of the MCB guys are involved with the U19s I believe.

I assume Stockdale is the Wallace player.

    Yep

Very few rock players eligible as their team mostly u19

Correct on Stockdale and McIlmurray is the CCB player, same as at Christmas. Surprised at only two given the team finished second in the inter pro's earlier in the year.

That is very interesting to see more representatives from Connacht than Ulster in a schools underage squad. fantastic to see from Connacht perspective. Disappointing that 3 separate schools in Leinster have more or as many players involved as the other three provinces

3 Connacht lads are very good on small bit ive seen them play. Disappointing so many from Leinster compared to other provinces

indeed, I believe he is an underage international with hockey aswell but you would hope rugby would hold greater appeal.

Doubt anyone will have one and everyone will have to wait for game/irfu to announce squad.

Schools are announcing on their websites etc of players picked in the squad
Jack Power and Hugo Keane from Blackrock have made squad.

Shame we will not have our best squad competing in the FIRA competition

The squad going to FIRA should have the best from the youths, schools and exiles. With a second strength squad of the remainder playing in the fixtures the youths play.
The schools v youths fixture at Christmas should be final trial in selection for each squad though obviously outstanding performances in schools cups/later stages of youths competitions like pan munster etc should give a player another chance to be looked at by irish coaches

Yeah. Why do you say that we dont have our best squad out. Who isnt available or who is injured.??

  • Registered Users Posts: 252 ✭✭rughug

My dear man . It would be nigh on impossible
to pick a squad from that wide expanse of players. The standard of the schools squad at that age is just so much higher that it makes more sense to wait till 19 to marry the clubs and exiles in.Current system is fine. The net is cast wide open and no one misses out.

It wouldn't be nigh on impossible. There would be plenty of players from youths able to make a combined squad just look at 20s this year JOD, AB, PD all comfortably making side and would have done so at 18s no bother as well.
My point is Ireland is not sending its best side to FIRA. Its sending only some of their best players.

massive difference between 20s and 18s... schools usually control if not dominate youths when they play each other at this level..

imagine munster clubs versus leinster schools... it would get ugly

Schools normally do win but we should have our best team competing in FIRA. When the youths played in FIRA the schools at least had the 4 nations tournament to play in the UK but when that stopped and there was to be only 1 European under 18 tournament we should have entered a mixed side.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 16 mtwr999

youths will have gotten 3 games this year, one in Italy and two in France..

    they aren't missing out..

Lost Sheep you often bleat on about the youths not getting as good a look in at this age grade. The reality is club players have nowhere near the conditioning of their schools counterparts. They quickly make up this gap upon leaving school but at U18 level(4th and 5th years a lot of the time) there is a real physical mis-match.
Look at the Leinster Cup final, how many club players would be able for it? Also in the same game look at the change in Cleary since going to Clongowes and Carberry and Oliver? No one doubting the youths players ability but the conditioning is a major issue.

There isnt a real physical mis match in the very top players. At Leinster Senior Schools final i would say about the top 20 or so youths straight away would and another 20 or so if they put in moe of the training the schools guys can put in

Anyway to get back to rugby. Connacht Senior Development Schools final is in sportsground today between Holy Rosary College Mountbellew v Scoil Chuimsitheach Chiaráin while replay of Senior Schools Cup final is tomorrow
