Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Greystones - eFibre (Eircom Fibre Roll-out)

As you may know already, Eircom has lived it's fibre service and has technicians setting up peoples homes with new VDSL (fibre) modems in the middle of next week.

Greystones is currently being worked on by KN networks and Eircom, and could possibly be ready over the next month or two.

There is a thread on the Broadband section for those people who wish to help map out the locations of FTTC (Fiber-To-The-Cabinet) for the general public.

A complete guide to Eircom's new fibre broadband in the Daily Business Post explains what FTTC is and other items, including prices.

If you see the new VDSL cabinet, on the right, in the post displayed, please inform us on the mapping thread and we'll add it to the Google Map straight away. Also, if you get a photo of it in it's setting, that'll be great too! :D

Alternatively, if you also see the ADSL cabinet (on the left-hand side of the picture), you could inform me here. Where ever there is an ADSL cabinet, a fibre cabinet will appear over the coming weeks or so.

The bottom link in my signature also shows our current progress over all of Ireland. You can see the cabinets that have been found in Greystones so far (or current work). The Beechbrook Park (Greystones) cabinet was Eircom's/KN Network's 2000th installation. That's over 300,000 connections so far and they are planning on 1.2million homes being connected. :)

    Thanks in advance.

    Craig.

250m from my gaff to the newly installed cab on Bellevue Rd - looking forward to getting VDSL.

UPC have missed a trick not upgrading the network in Greystones - probably won't be worth their while now, most people are already using Sky for their TV and VDSL will take the market for high-speed broadband...

I just saw one of the new cabinets on the Mill Road on the edge of the Burnaby.

Do you mean the one I have marked down for St.Vincent Road? Or another one is along that road?

Charlesland Wood This is the location of where I saw 'cab' spray painted on the grass, no cabinet yet but it will be directly adjacent by the looks of it. Exciting stuff if you're into this sort of thing ;)

Yep - I was told by an Eircom Engineer who was working on a road in the area that it was all set up and ready to be switched on. It's just the regulator is preventing them from switching on for a few weeks for some reason.

Nah ComReg said they couldn't take orders until May 20th because of the way the rules were set around 6 months ago. Some customers will be getting their service installed this Thursday but not in Greystones.

I think I posted about this before, those that are lucky enough to be in the enabled (cabinets rolled out and working) fibre areas of Greystones will be eligible to upgrade. Sadly for others, as hinted above this could be a few months down the line (badum tish). :D

When I spoke to engineers at the top of Rathdown Park one day, they said it would be June-July that we'd probably be going live (our estate I suppose). It's possible Eircom will say an area is ready but it won't really be, as we are seeing the case with many other exchange areas,i.e. Drogheda, Cork etc.

Saw a KN Networks truck today with a load of these cabinets at Charlesland roundabout parked on the cycle lane - don't see any oldskool ADSL cabinet on google maps at where they were parked. Anywho, expect these cabs be popping up over the next couple of days in Charlesland.

Its between Kindlestown Upper (called heights on the map) and Kindlestown Rise - road up to Coolagad/Kindlestown forest.
Just by the postbox - didn't see any flags on the map though??

. - scrub the above - you are spot on - we are talking about the same box...

Work underway today building the plinth for the Cab in Charlesland Wood. It looks like it's been a month since putting in the other one at Seabourne View roundabout only 100metres away.

Yeah, there seem to some guys back around in Greystones. It went quite for a a few weeks. They were probably working on Newcastle, Kilcoole, Kilpeddar etc.

A friend noted that there were guys working up at windgates only yesterday.

I met two KN contractors removing the old 1970s copper cabinet from teh footbridge near the railway station. There are a few more of these that will need replacing, one is at the Delgany-Killincarrick roundabout. But they still have a bit more work to do.

They've also had the ESB work done on the majority or all cabinets that are already installed.

I think we could be looking at July 12th which is a date mentioned by others, for other exchanges to go live.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,686 ✭✭✭Charlie-Bravo

Would prefer if UPC bothered to give Charlesland the 100Mb BB service with the full compliment of TV channels that Dublin has along with the HD and Horizon box. I can only see people leaning towards Sky HD and then going back on the old copper ADSL (in hope of getting the VDSL).

If KN networks are pulling fibre over Windgates, they should really pull a second fibre for UPC at the same time and make a bit of profit doing it. But this is Ireland, it'll have to be done twice!

Has Vodafone revealed any info on their schedule? Can't find anything on their site... Just a note that they will contact existing customers as it becomes available.

Will their schedule be pretty much the same as eircom?

Well yeah, because they have to wait till Eircom have finished commissioning all the cabinets in this area.

In regards to UPC, somebody said on another thread that it would be great if UPC worked off Eircom VDSL. It would mean UPC would have a much larger coverage area for customer base.

Interesting, but how fast can VDSL go to and will it do TV too through a router/modem? Also once on VDSL, does the standard voice element on the line get dropped and phones now go to VOIP? Slowly learning how these things are put together.

On another note for charlesland, I count 3 additional existing ADSL cabinets in place - so a possible extra 3 VDSL cabs to be installed.

These are, one between C.Grove and C.Park (on spine road), one at C.Court (beside the first line of duplexes), and one to the left the Crescent Apartments at the last road for C.Park.

I haven't seen any other cabinets down at the Charlesland Centre. So with 5 possible cabs in Charlesland, is that enough to meet demand? Does anyone know many households can one cab serve?

VDSL can go to 100Mb/s but that requires that vectoring be enabled.

the voice element (POTS) is optional in Eircom's wholesale product, so you should be able to order VDSL on its own, and use VOIP for voice calls if you so wish.

I don't think any of the ISPs are doing a bundled TV service yet, but it is technically possible over VDSL (using multicast).

Yep, it is. Eircom will be bringing out their TV service in the Autumn time. They've already surveyed some customers, according to on Boards.ie user in the Broadband section.

If you can, could you take photos of the new VDSL cabinets in their environs and give a description where each one is located (when they arrive), please?

I'll see if I can get an updated list from IrelandOffline of all the VDSL locations in Greystones.

are eircom still looking for a line rental these days or have they copped on to the fact that BB and VOIP bundle pricing are the way forward?

Update: NT networks working up at Drummin today. I suppose the Willow Grove area will have cabs installed soon. I note from the map that a cab is located in Kilpedder. Just wondering if Kipedder is connected to Newtown exchange and Willow Grove connected to Greystones if there're routing the cable all the way through Delgany from Greystones?

It's still line rental. It'll be the case until the people cop on that VoIP is the way forward.

Drummin and Willow Grove are in the Greystones exchange. Kilpeddar is connected to the Newtownmountkennedy exchange. Kilcoole is too according to others but the Eircom wholesale map says otherwise. :S

On the Mapping it Says Kilcoole will be Connected to Newtown exchange for VDSL but that is not the Case from Speaking to engineers they have run the Fibre up through Charlesland via Eden gate i have seen them do this, but from Line Checker it would point to Kilcoole being connected to Newtown as Live date is inline with Newtown Launch later this year.

Charlesland Wood cabinet installed. Adding to map!

I saw that KN networks were excavting at the ESB sub-station at Seabourne view so I guess that they've routed power to the cab on that side.

I've edited it and moved it to the rest of the Greystones list (Page 8).

I added your image to it as well. It will be added to the Fusion map over the next couple of days.

Edit: Could you get the code off the copper cabinet for me as well, please? "GRS1_XXX"

There is easily 40 cabs between Greystones and Delgany. There may be more VDSL cabs that have been installed or waiting to be done. I've fingers crossed that Greystones will be going live this month.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,686 ✭✭✭Charlie-Bravo

I had a look at the cabinet today in Charlesland Wood. There is no particular stamp or badge, just a faint 3 digit number: 050 (I think that's what it is; it could be 030 as its not very clear).

So in interest I took a walk over to the other cabinet at Seabourne View and the marking is much clearer for that one (051). There is no prefix 'GRS1_' or anything like that. As this one is marked 051, I trust the Charlesland Wood copper cabinet is 050?!

Not sure how to add the pic to the collaboration map but here's a pic for Seabourne View.

Can someone explain this obsession with listing these cabinets? With such detail, even down to their numbers?

Is it some sort of train spotting fetish? Just asking.

Can someone explain this obsession with listing these cabinets? With such detail, even down to their numbers?

Kind of. It's just a public crowdsourcing project to provide information on the whereabouts of local cabinets which would show the broadband users whether VDSL technology is available in their area. According to reports by customers contacting Broadband Sales, a customer can only avail of the service if within a 1KM of copper line to the cabinet.

VDSL technology is quite important for individuals who want to work from home using demanding applications that require great amounts of bandwidth especially in the upstream of things (uploading to servers or using Remote Desktop are quite demanding).
"Sufficient outbound bandwidth is also critical when hosting remotely-accessible services on your LAN. If you use Remote Desktop or LogMeIn or other remote protocol to access your home or office computer while on the road, you should have at least 1 Mbps upstream. 2 Mbps or better is a good idea when accessing remote files via VPN (or use Sharepoint Online, Google-Apps, or Office 365). If you’re hosting a website, you’ll need some significant outbound bandwidth too, but that becomes more complicated because your bandwidth requirements will change depending on how popular your site is. I recommend 2 Mbps or more to start."
    -URL="http://www.tesla-it.com/en-us/terms-and-definitions/why-is-internet-bandwidth-so-important"]Source[/URL

But it is also needed for the home users who are currently using VOD or other services that require more bandwidth for solid streaming. Netflix and RTE player are examples of Video on demand (VOD) services.

Let me know if you want to know anything else. I have google at hand to help me out. :D

Line Checker now Says July to September :D

They always meant to say that. The map says July to September. They just like to confuse people. It must be some kind of game for them. Especially when they pass you on from department to department just to figure out if you are on ADSL or ADSL2+.:
Tech Support: "No. You are still on 8Mb[...]Hold on, I'll put you through Broadband Sales to place an order."

Customer Service (not Sales):"Yes. You are on 24Mb [...]"

Me:"Eh...no, I was just told by the Tech team that we are on our original 8Mb package. We received a letter a few weeks back saying that the title on our package would change to "Advanced". Is it possible that we just have an amended title and the engineer hasn't ported us over?"

Customer Service:"Hmmm, maybe. [Cut off for a few minutes while he chats to another person/superior] I will put the order through again and the change will happen in 24hrs."

    [This was a lie.]

[I left a message on the forums where the moderator said it would take UP TO 10 days.]

[Currently at Day 5. It is suppose to be done today. Next Monday by latest.]

Spoke to Eircom a week ago about Eden Gate and was told they had no dates at the moment. Which is weird as I can see the new boxes there.

Similarly onto Magnet about Delgany, where 2 months ago they told me December, Sales are now saying they too have no information from Eircom and December is unlikely. Rang back twice just to be sure - same answer both times.

    :(

Last time I rang they said late August, now they are saying Greystones exchange is due to be enabled on the 2nd October. We've an appointment for 11th October to get whatever needs to be done in the house completed.
