So I have a job offer over in Newcastle as well as one up in Dublin. I'm a Mechanical Engineering graduate and both jobs are with multinational companies.
I'm leaning towards the Dublin job because the newcastle job will get me into a very specialist area.
The problem is that area doesn't really exist in Ireland and I can't see myself in 10 years settling down anywhere but Ireland
Just looking for advice from people who have made the move, how they found making friends and starting off in a big city knowing no1.
    Thanks for the help

My friends have the same attitude. Most of them don't like being away. You say the Newcastle job is in a specialist area that's practically non-existent in Ireland. Is it an area you really want to work in. Some of my friends moved to England for the excellent training offered by the NHS a few years ago and are now planning on going back home if they can secure employment. I've been living in Manchester for nearly a year now and I've not really met anyone. I live quite a bit from the city centre but my friends swear by GAA clubs.
I'd say you could try it a few years but who knows what awaits you in Newcastle. I know someone there and he adores it. He reckons it's an amazing city with an awesome social scene.
    Hope this helps.

Newcastle is more than a social scene city although if Carlsberg did socialising they would probably choose Newcastle!
Plenty to do there though starting with the Toon Army and Newcastle United which is a soap opera in itself. Good Irish club beside St James Park, Great Chinatown, shops and riverside walks. The areas around the city in Northumberland are beautiful if you are interested in outdoor pursuits as well as access to the North Sea.
The North East is developing well and plenty of opportunities to advance your career

Not too far from Newcastle myself, living and working in Durham for the past two years.

The North East is a great area, great people and as others have said it is full of stuff to do. Newcastle is a great City too, it really doesn't lack much.

It is hard being away from family, but it's only an hour on a plane.
