Ha the idea that the Department of Justice even has the time to bother with this is laughable.

Facebook is rubbish. Made me begin to hate my acquaintances with their silly opinions and crap lives. So i left it and i'm trying to remember how long ago it was: somewehere between 1 year and 2. Havent even really thought of it since. Plus it makes one seem more mysterious when no one knows their minutia

Facebook = self promotional horse$hite. The sooner the social networking fad dies the better.

Employers are welcome to view my profile. Theres nothing on there that I would be ashamed to tell them about. Activate timeline review and you can moderate what posts show up in your timeline. Things that people tag me in do not automatically show on my timeline without my say so.

The KGB and CIA could only have dreamed of the information people will freely give up in the pursuit of being loved and in touch with people they'll never see again.

Fools and their privacy are easily parted.

I got into a discussion this evening with a family friend about Facebook privacy. He swears up and down that employers can apply to the Dept. of Justice in order to gain FULL access to everyones Facebook accounts.

Your friend is an idiot, find better ones.

I got into a discussion this evening with a family friend about Facebook privacy. He swears up and down that employers can apply to the Dept. of Justice in order to gain FULL access to everyones Facebook accounts. I asked one of my friends about this and he said that he has also heard of employers doing this. I thought this was ridiculous, but after seriously thinking about it- I really am not so sure! How do we really know what Facebook is doing with our information? Who can really see it?

I think I am going to delete my Facebook account. I find that on nights out, people that I have never met come up to say hello to me because they 'recognise me from Facebook'. Today, I couldn't get into a bathroom in a pub for a full five minutes because there were a group of girls taking photos of themselves at the door to put up on Facebook. I found out some very upsetting news a few weeks ago from reading a Facebook post, something that should never have been even posted. Conversations are based around Facebook posts. I guess I just don't want my life to revolve around Facebook and I think that's the way most people seem to be heading.

    Facebook is taking over.

Does anyone else share this view? Any thoughts?

    Your friends are talking crap

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Everyone seems to be mentioning the sharing of personal information as a bad thing, but nobody seems to be saying why. Can anyone be more specific as to what they feel is wrong with sharing personal information on Facebook? Is the potential for identity fraud the only problem? Or do you have other problems with it?

Because who gives a $hite that you're on your way to see Star Trek for the 3rd time or that your little bundle of joy just learned to say something or that you just checked into the local for a few cocktails with the gurleees lol xoxo.

I use facebook alright and have no problem with the majority of stuff on it because I just block out the people who annoy me- but why people feel the need to share every banal detail of their lives is beyond me. And don't get me started on the grammar and text speak...

What's the problem then? I don't see crappy status updates cos I block or delete anyone who does it

I lock everything down but facebook seems to find a way to still send me crap or re-enable stuff. Like FB games. I turn it all off and thats fine for a while but eventually it will start doing it again. I used to use for distant family and friends but they all seem to get sucked into the habit of posting banalities. So eventually I just block them all. At this point I rarely look it. Very close to closing my account.

Facebook was useful for a while, but its gone down the route of mindless social spam. Its got too greedy.

exactly, it's like in The Social Network, when they want to monetise it and then won't because once money is involved it's no longer cool, facebook isn't cool anymore.

    It's a love/hate relationship :L
I certainly don't go around asking people for extra lives and the like though. That gets annoying.

I have made it my mission to go through candy crush without ever putting it on facebook just to spite them.

I continue to play mostly out of hate.

facebook isnt a genre, its social networking are refering to; not all sites are like that,am the owner/admin of a specialist social network and its locked down to bits in terms of privacy unlike fb.:P

there isnt anything wrong with facebook nor social networking the problem is the muppets who leave their walls revealing to anyone and keep telling people where they are exactly, when theyre going to be on holiday [oh and ever so politely giving us a reminder when theyre at the airport and what airport theyre at],when theyre necking illegal pills/smoking the whacky baccy [with a photo of them doing this and their bongs/pills etc],snogging the face of slutty men or women, showing their bare arse/tits at the camera....oh yes am sure the thieves will be thankful when they turn up at the door to ransack the people vacant house and am sure their future bosses will look upon their drug use, stupidity and sluttery fondly.

people who dont know what theyre doing with a social network site really shoud ask someone they trust to help them out with setting up the privacy on it,its ridiculous the amount of people have across with fully open accounts lately and the sht theyre telling other people.

If employers are going to go down the route of rejecting applications who mention an quick toke on facebook a year earlier, they really are shooting themsevles in the foot.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

The only thing worse than generic, attention seeking facebook posts are those posts from tossers complaining about facebook and how they are so close to closing their account.

I set up an account when it took off and used it for about a month before the shiyte games and updates from people I haven't seen since school became tiresome.

So I stopped using it and all was well until the day that I got a call from a mate asking if I was ok as "I" was on FB saying I'd been mugged in London and had no money to get home! (I was sitting in my office meeting a supplier at the time).

True enough, when I logged in the status had been changed and the chat app was going like mad telling all and sundry what dire straits I was in and to send money.

In fairness to FB they resolved it very quickly but after this I locked it down tight and aside from the chat app which I use through a multi-IM app to keep in touch with some people who don't have Google Talk I haven't updated it since Jan 2012 and almost never log in to it.

Every so often I say to myself that I should just delete it, but there's feck all there anyway so I'm not that pushed and as I say, I do use the chat part a bit. Anything that anyone else posts that links to me has to be approved, and the profile shows nothing to the outside world so that does me for now.

The only thing that bothers me is if my company can find me. Done a search and i cannot be found. That's all that matters

  • A point nobody has really addressed yet is that many employers EXPECT you to have an online presence, especially for journalism/writing/creative type jobs. I've been told several times now that if they search for you and find nothing, your CV goes into the bin, because either you have something to hide or you're not into using social media, which is a bad thing as far as they're concerned.

Ah thats what really pissed me off. You dont!!! Once you get to the stages where you need a "ticket" theres a little tab in the bottom right corner which allows you to do three trials to unlock a ticket.
