Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Had to be a red.

    Good peno

Should have been a red no?

Terrible hesitation from Barzagli, entirely unaware of what's around him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,968 ✭✭✭aindriu80

yeah it should have been red because he took two swipes at the mexican.

Taking nothing away from Hernandez, great peno, but why do some keepers jump forward a yard instead of staying centre on the line or picking a side and diving?

    I've never understood it.

Narrows the angle significantly, same as when a keeper is closing down a striker in a 1 v. 1

Figuratively makes the keeper a bit bigger. Although since they still have to guess which way to go, it's not as effective as in a 1 v. 1 situation

    images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTEZIfcW0dpOoOU55WosjWZd9mbAoYqIMPEinFPalgaNJ4oSUpSGQ

The closer the keeper comes to the penalty spot, the less the keeper has to stretch.

Only thing is if keeper saves it after coming off the line there is a chance the pen may be retaken if the ref has spotted it

The movement forward can also act as momentum to dive quicker/further.

Yes indeed, that's why the linesman moves over to the edge of the box. They're ridiculously lenient in my opinion.

Remember the Sligo FAI cup win where the penalty shoot-out score was like 2-1 or something? That's why. The linesman let both keepers come out half way to the spot.

Oh I see, but since they've to wait until the player's foot touches the ball would moving out not make their chances of saving it slimmer? They'd lose half a second from their dive and that probably makes a huge difference

Italy have been impressive on the ball. They should be 1 or 2 up but also a man down. Balotelli and Giaccherini have been good but haven't taken the chances they have gotten.

Is VdB expected to play Martinez in a double pivote with Busquets, in the place of Alonso?

If they did wait until it touches the ball, then yes. In practice, they move early enough to set themselves to spring again.

what an idiot of a ref, refs like him will mostly likely be at the WC

I'm sure the manager will be happy with the needless yellow card that Balotelli picked up

I'm not a massive fan of the front three. Soldado has had a good season with Valencia, but the other two have been quite poor of late.

Pedro tends to really bring his A-game for the seleccion though.

    Need more information there.

Interesting Spanish side, hopefully Soldado can do himself justice. With Cesc in the side possession maximisation is clearly the priority, the team does have a good balance to it though and there are lots of options to change things from the bench.

Ack, what was that about rubber bullets and tear gas on supporters?

    Need more information there.

It was on protesters outside the ground

    PROTESTS IN RIO
"There have been further protests at the Confederations Cup, this time outside the Maracana in Rio de Janerio before Mexico's match with Italy. Police used tear gas to disperse around 500 protestors who were voicing their objection to the amount of public money being spent on stadiums for the World Cup. At this stage it is unclear whether anyone was injured or arrested."

It was supposed to be all funded by the private sector according the government but its been lies and 80% of it has been funded by the public money

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,122 ✭✭✭DerekDGoldfish

The protesters have a point, in Brazila they demolished a stadium and built a new 71,000 seater stadium despite no top flight team being in the region that will be empty after 3 or 4 games (and the 4 or 5 in the World Cup obviously)

I google imaged 'Belo Horizonte (filter last 24 hours)' to see if there many Nigerian and Tahiti fans there, and most of the pictures are of demos and disturbances on the streets. Seems to be unrest in most cities in Brazil at the moment.

Someone should kickstart on twitter the perennial (quadranniel maybe) rumour that FIFA have begged the FA to be on standby to host it in England if the feckless foreign types are unable to get their act together.

And that the FAI have offered to help out and lend the Aviva, Croke Park and some other GAA and Rugby stadia they dont control in return for a world cup place
