Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Getting rid of layers

I've had my hair layered for the past few years, but now that my hair is thinner as a result of medication and well past my shoulders, I feel that the layers are making it look stringy and thin. What can I do now? I didn't let the hairdresser cut the layers last time, so they've grown out, as they do, and the main layer is now 2-3 inches above the ends of the length of my hair. I'm trying to grow my hair, so I'd rather not have to cut off the ends. What else could I do?

Hi - don't worry hair will grow - it is good to keep the ends looking healthy. Hair looks much healthier when freshly cut then with thinning ends.
Do you not think though that with your hair being thin it will look even thinner with no layers?
My hair is not the thickest, but it is very long and I have been growing it long for my wedding upstyle - so avoiding any layers. But I find I can't get any volume into it when blowdrying. I can't wait to get some layers in to get it really full and bouncy again.

No, it looks thicker without layers but it does look a bit flat because it gets weighed down. The problem with the layers is that the length of my hair is very thin now and looks a bit rubbish. It only looks good the day I blowdry it - the second day it just looks really stringy and thin. It's also annoying for styling into buns/brains because bits stick out everywhere.

Keeping your hair well-trimmed will actually help it look much thicker. All split ends are going to do is thin it even more, so don't go down the road of not cutting it. Pretty much the only way to maintain healthy length is regular trimming - an eighth of an inch every eight weeks - but you need to be starting from a point where you've no split ends to begin with, and, if you've not had a proper trim in a while, that may well mean getting an inch or two cut off to begin with.

After that, your layers will grow out sooner than you'd think.

I don't have any layers at all anymore. My hair is about mid-way down my back and is just cut bluntly straight across the bottom, because that is the way I like it. It looks really thick and much healthier looking than when I had layers (I found they made my hair too scraggly looking too.)

The only bad thing is that it takes an age to blow-dry.

I think that long hair which is quite thin looks better when it's had a couple of inches taken off the ends. I don't mean chopping it all off, but two inches off the ends will probably give your hair some more thickness and volume, and the shorter layers won't be as obvious either. As another poster mentioned, a good trim will take off the split ends and when your hair grows back, it'll look far healthier.

I have extremely thick hair, but it looked far thicker when it was shorter than it does now that it's past my shoulders. As much as I love the length, I miss the volume it had when it was shoulder length.
