I've heard that Tesco are lined up for the cattle mart once the CAS is finished. I think a secondary school for that side of town would be better use of the space regardless of the CAS going ahead.

A secondary school on that side of the town would be a much better use of that money. It would reduce a HUGE amount of traffic from the Dean Street side and in itself, would render the CAS even more useless.

If Tesco go anywhere it will be to the Smithwick's site. The Kilkenny City & Environs Development Plan 2014-2020 has been adopted by the Council and it clearly states that the Mart site will not be considered for retail until significant expansion has occurred on both the Smithwick's site and MacDonagh Junction.

    Page 57:
    Phasing of City Centre Expansion
For the purpose of city centre expansion the following phasing of development lands within the
    City & Environs is proposed:
    • Phase 1: Smithwick lands the subject of the masterplan referred to in Section 3.4.3 and,
at an appropriate scale, MacDonagh Junction.
    • Phase 2: The former mart site at the Castlecomer Road.
The release of phase 2 lands for major retailing will only be considered where the local authority
is satisfied that planning permission is granted, and/or significant expansion has already
occurred on the phase 1 lands and that any additional retailing on the phase 2 lands will not
have a negative impact on the vitality or viability of the retail core or other centre.
It is considered that the definition of major retail expansion for the purposes of this section of
the City & Environs is 1,000sqm for convenience and 2,000sqm for comparison.

    Objective
4F The Smithwick lands, the subject of the masterplan referred to in Section 3.4.3, will be
the focus for major new retail expansion
    (convenience and comparison retailing) in
the City & Environs over the plan period.

A school on the Mart site is a good idea IMO.

The guy from the County Council reckons it will be great for public transport?

Public Transport of some sort would be great for Kilkenny. It's the type of system we need to be looking at. Not another bridge. :(

It's funny that the mart being empty should bother anyone, it was empty 6 days out of 7 when it was in use and no one was bothered then.

If I were to develop the site I'd build a new arena that could facilitate all sports including show jumping with dedicated coach parking.

Anybody got a link to the map of the new road? What families will be put out of their homes, and what business will be forced to move?

None as far as I know, excluding Vicar street, which has already been done. If I'm right the road will go through the Auxillary hospital and into the mart.

The Road goes along the front of the old Hospital and the back of the Padmore and Barnes building.

Whatever about catbear's suggestion, more retail space is hardly the essential thing, unless you're looking for more windows to display those wonderfully artistic "TO LET" signs. McDonagh Junction is pretty dead most times you walk through.

I'm not too well up on this scheme (but should be) so at the moment have no strong views either way.

Can anyone tell me, ref this map, are they just constructing the Wolfe Tone to Dean St section now, or is all of the red ready to commence ie roundabouts at Brannigans, Dunningstown road, Tullaroan Rd, Lousybush & road linking all these?

If just the bridge bit now, is there a proposed timescale for the rest?

AS the Western Environs Roads aren't started (& won't be for the forseeable future?), presumably the new road will go through the Butts, up to new roundabout at Kennyswell area and have right turn only until such time as this Western Rd bit is done?

When it comes to the completed ring road my presumption would be (based on the positioning of the Callan Road roundabout and the Comer roundabout) that the next phase of ring road would go behind the Butts and the Granges Road and come across by the Bleach Road and onto the Comer road.

I don't understand. It does not sound like a completely outrageous idea.
What would you suggest for the site?

I asked the same question a few pages back, only the bridge, the junction at Vicar street and the mart section is going ahead.
The new roads and roundabouts at the Butts and the Kennyswell bypass ect are not going ahead.

    Here's whats going ahead

I hear that the final decision on Vicar street has not been made yet.

I sent this letter to councillors today to ask them to stop the CAS and review it tomorrow at council meeting- I am one of the protestors.

    Hi Councillors,
Please drive past protestors on way to council meeting tomorrow. Think of these ordinary decent people who are your voters as you make biggest decision in this city's history. Look at their eyes. Remember all those faces from doorsteps when campaigning. Look into your hearts. Please help save Kilkenny. Stop the bridge,
    Thanks

I will never understand this protest. Why did they not object at the planning stage. Driving past the protest and looking at the protesters and I know some of them they are type of people that love to give out about anything. Whether it's new bridge or cinema they just hate change even if it for thr better of all in Kilkenny. All 83000 in the county

Well there must have been several objections by various parties to this bridge I'd have thought hence all the delays?

The building of this large bridge in no way is comparable to a cinema either by the way. Just things that you yourself have an interest in.

Just read on RTE news online that cops are there with riot gear is there any truth to that or is it RTE sensationalism at it's best?

Didn't realise they were destroying the entire city to build this bridge.

It is the knock on effect that this bridge will have. It is bad for the city.

If you go down and talk to the protesters you'll get a different story. They all love Kilkenny, they want to see progress but not in the form of this bridge. This bridge is going to lead to poor development. Just look at Carlow. Tullow street is fecked. The men in charge of Carlow when Fair Green was put through planning are now in charge in Kilkenny. We need to save Kilkenny from these 3 stooges
