Still can't maintain an internet connection

So a few days ago I posted here explaining my problem which is as follows.

Alright, so I've been having this problem for a few months now, what happens is that every 1-3 days, my internet connection on my pc mostly stops working. What I mean by mostly, is that I can't open any new webpages on any kind of browser, I can't open any program that needs the internet to open (to check for updates). However, if something is downloading, it will continue to download, any program open that uses an internet connection stays connected, such as Skype. Now, the only solution I currently know of is to completely restart my computer. Restarting my router doesn't help, waiting for long periods of time doesn't help, nothing else fixes it. It's beginning to drive me mad. I've tried some commands in Run>Cmd, but to no avail.

I have a Samsung laptop running Windows 8 if that helps, if anyone knows what's going on I'd appreciate it, just ask if you need more info.

So I've just ran in to the problem again, and the solutions I've tried include:

CMD > ipconfig /flushdns = did not work
    CMD > ipconfig /release > ipconfig /renew = did not work
Turn off all firewalls = did not work

So I'm having this problem now, and using a different computer to post here, so any suggestions can be found to work, or not work faster. Anyone know what's going on and how I might fix it?

How are you connecting to the router, cable or wireless.

If you are using wireless try a cable. If a cable works then make sure you haven't got both Windows and the wireless adapter manufacturers software trying to control it.

I'm using wireless, but so is the computer I'm currently on, I'll go check wired anyway

No, it still doesn't work when wired

Would this happen to be UPC? When your internet connection stops working are you still able to ping websites?

    cmd -> ping www.google.com

If so, then it's your DNS. Set DNS manually, I use Google's DNS servers and never have any problems anymore.

My isp is Eircom, I can ping google, getting 31ping minimum & maximum.

Is there anyway to manually set my DNS without having to restart my pc to use the internet? So that I don't have to wait for the problem to occur again before finding out if it's a solution.

Setting the DNS manually shouldn't need a restart. Just follow the steps as per that link and see if it works. If it needs a restart then no harm.

If you can definitely ping Google then I'm positive that this should sort it out for you.

OP, what antivirus software are you using? Have you tested in Safe Mode with Networking? I don't believe it's an Eircom DNS issue but rather software trying to protect your connection (such as Norton / McAfee which are really common in doing this but in a bad way).

It's his DNS. OP, when your connection goes down next time try opening your browser and entering http://74.125.24.147/ - it should open Google.

I use Avast antivirus, I haven't tested in safe mode because the problem takes a long time to occur, and I would be in safe mode for days, or longer.

I tried to manually change my DNS, but it didn't work. I ended up restarting because I wanted to get back to doing my stuff, next time it happens I'll be sure to try that link.

you should count yourself lucky OP, complications can occur if you establish a connection for longer than 3-4 hours

    Download ccleaner and run it.

I already have that, and have run it recently.

I don't believe it is since he can get online initially and ping the DNS (and I'm using an Eircom line now, no issues) and Skype remains connected (which uses server IP's, not domains). I've seen this issue a dozen times related to security software.

Can you try and temporarily disable Avast and see if the issue still occurs. Also, can you do the following and tell me what options are selection on your LAN / Wireless connection (whichever one you are using as of now).

WIN + R and type "ncpa.cpl" > Right Click LAN / Wireless > Properties > Screenshot or type the options. Example below.

    local-area-connection-properties.JPG

Finally, what OS are you using?

He can access URLs initially, then he can't, but he can still ping / access things through IP. To me that is a DNS issue. Skype remaining connected only strengthens this.

OP, try putting in Eircom's DNS server IP rather than Googles:

    Primary DNS:
    159.134.0.1

    Secondary DNS:
    159.134.0.2

I have already tried disabling both Avast firewall, and Windows firewall, my OS is Windows 8. Her's a pic of my settings.
