The Local Electoral Area Boundary Committee Report was published on 30 May 2013.

Castleisland town has been wiped from the map where as comparable towns with populations around 2k such as Dingle, Kenmare, Killorglin and Cahersiveen are represented by a blue dot Castleisland is not.

Dingle, Kenmare, Killorglin and Cahersiveen will be part of the new South West Kerry Municipal district. All the way from Slea Head to Lauragh! (sounds like a radio kerry ad!). Killorglin will be the capital of the municipal area.

Castleisland is to be subsumed into the new Killarney Municipal Area.

I haven't followed the process of these new districts but am wondering why they seem to all have a very large number of councillors?
The South and West Kerry area has 9 - why not divide it in 3 and have smaller areas with 3 councillors each, or 2 with 4 and 5.?
It seems crazy to have a local authority area that stretches from Cloghane or Ventry to Eyeries. Dáil constituencies are capped at 5 TDs - why not do the same for these new areas?

The terms and reference required areas with between six and ten councillors.

Dingle, Killorglin, Cahersiveen and Kenmare all get the blue dot treatment but Castleisland which has a comparable population does not.

Incidently they also got the name of Dingle wrong.

here is the link to the report:

    http://www.environ.ie/en/Publications/LocalGovernment/Administration/FileDownLoad,33299,en.pdf

Calsteisland Rural ed is marked on the map but CastleIsland town does not appear on the map (with a blue dot) in the same way as Killorglin, Kenmare, Dingle etc.

Dingle rural ed is marked An Dangean.

Dingle rural ed is marked An Dangean.

Just a small point - there is no Dingle Rural ED -- the ED marked as An Daingean is just the town itself (am not making any statement re names etc) - and not all of it even at that. The area around it is Na Gleannta (Glens). Causes lots of confusion as it stretches from parts of Lispole to Ventry village and includes much of the overspill of Dingle from the Tiger years.
