Secured premises

When I was living in the UK a police officer advised me to lock my driveway gates. He said that, instead of trespass, any intruder could be charged with entering secured premises.

Does such a law apply here? If so does someone commit an offence say by climbing over the gate/wall?

Its trespass over here unless they try to commit an offence with a 5year + penalty whilst trespassing in which case its bumped up to burglary.

Is trespass a criminal offence or is it a civil matter?
