If they are going to go with a TIM method then they should be using high quality stuff with proper application.

Why spend billions developing a cpu and then slap any amount of low grade gunk onto it?

Because Intels motto may as well be "**** You until amd can compete again".

we're lucky to be seeing their prices stay the same

It looks like Intel do not care once the CPU runs stable at stock speeds with a stock heatsink.

If the connection between the die and IHS is very poor. Will this render an expensive cooler ineffective and hence a waste of money unless you are deliding?

Amd are competitive imo if your cpu budget is under €200 and you don't mind the higher power consumption.

    Oem's are a different story. They would sooner but a 3470 and a 650gt into a system than a 6300 or 8320 with a better card.

I was randomly thinking about something vaguely related the other day, given how easy it is to overclock pretty much every single CPU to well over 4.0GHz, why aren't they selling any CPUs preclocked much higher out of the box? The only thing I could really think of was that they simply don't have to for performance reasons, and the low power consumption figures look great in reviews.

I'm guessing it has something to do with variable ambient temps around the world. Hot climates may struggle with the stock cooler at higher speeds.

They could always sell an even more enthusiast model than the k series though that are overclocked with better stock coolers. I guess that market is pretty small though.

Are they still doing extreme editions? So overpriced...

If they'd just sell pre-de-lidded models that would solve everything. :)

They enthusiast market is probably not very important to them.

They still sell extreme editions, LGA2011 I7s with more cache then standard 2011 CPUs. Of course the price is still crazy.

That would be nice but they may be worried about people cracking the die and then they have to deal with returns, even if the returns are rejected by them it's probably not worth the hassle.
Remember the days when all the good value AMD CPUs had no IHS :)

I didn't mean for them to sell CPUs without the IHS, but just sell them de-lidded, without TIM, so consumers can use their own, much like they do with CPU coolers currently.

I see, that would be nice.
Shame it does not look like something Intel would even consider.

Surely applying good TIM properly would improve their yields even more if it results in 10-20c temp drops.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

Considering that, technically speaking, using anything other than the Intel reference cooler voids the CPU's warranty? Yeah, pipe dream. :P A real pity, but it'll never happen.

Isn't there talk of direct to die kits being available soon for water blocks?

Hope so in case i delid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

I don't know if they're available for purchase yet, but I know EK announced a direct-to-die version of its Supreme HF a while back.

Thats it for ivy, dosen't like like they have haswell out yet.
I'd imagine it would work on haswell too but i'll let someone else test it. :P

1155 blocks are compatible with 1150 so it'll be fine

    why am i considering this?:o

it depends on if i decide to WC which will be july/august before i do and i do have access to super high grade TIM so we'll see. also putting a razor blade to a €300 cpu is not my idea of fun :pac:

im very cautious about replacing Tea_Bag as the forum guinea pig though:p.

I'll just mention that my whole rig will be up for grabs in a week or two... *ahem* WC *ahem*

Damn that means i'll have to go first :(

Should have a 4670k by thusrday so i'll spend a few days seeing if it clocks well enough to warrant/risk deliding.

I'm really interested in this. Thermal/OC results will dictate if I upgrade or not.

Too bad it's 1150 instead of a 1155 socket or else I would have bought an 4670K. From what I've heard, it's a 10% better than the 3570K but heck, the 3570k overclocked is a beast anyway.

I'll keep you informed provided i have a working pc :pac:

I'll post up how the clocking goes to give you an idea but in genaral i suck at the silicone lottery. One outta last 4 chips was a decent clocker.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

It might be 10% faster, but it gets 30% hotter. :P

Edit: Cheers. I haven't had the best luck either though. My QX9650 was pretty good (It'd ****ing better be, the price I paid), my 950 was horrible, and my 3570K is mediocre at best.

The only appealing thing for a new Haswell build is the not EOL socket really.

That was the thing that made me go for it instead of just getting an ivy for my z77 board.
