    Duncan inspires loyalty and patriotism by rewarding it, and equally by punishing treachery and traitors. A prime example of this is his treatment of the disloyal Thane of Cawdor prior to Macbeth's ascension to same: "No more that thane of Cawdor shall deceive our bosom interest. Go pronounce his present death and with his former title greet Macbeth".
