    Hello everyone!

My girlfriend and I are planning on moving to Canada for a year in summer 2014 and are currently looking into how viable finding jobs will be once there.

I have a honours degree in environmental science with 1 year laboratory experience while she has a honours degree in Teaching (up to leaving cert level chemistry and maths).

We are thinking of moving to Ontario as it looks to be the most built up area (around toronto and along the border) and may hold the best prospects.

However we both know that we have little work experience and don't expect to just walk into a job our first week.

I know that she will have to register with a teaching network over there in order to even start looking at jobs.

In general however, how difficult will we find it to obtain somewhat related work to our fields? We don't plan on going there to work in bars or restaurants so would like some info if anybody can shed a bit of light or experience.

Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance!

I'm a teacher too, and I'm going over looking for TEFL work, as I was told at work expos that teaching is difficult to get into over there, very competitive as they are facing similar cutbacks in education, oversupply of teachers etc. That's not to say that your GF won't get work teaching, her subjects may be desirable over there.

After looking into teaching over there, I decided against it. The process for getting your qualifications assessed can take months and is quite expensive. Also you have to do a medical which not only adds time to the process of your visa, but is also expensive! And after all that, no guarantee of work.

My advice would be to look into it yourself, see your options, and weigh out the positives and negatives. Maybe look into TEFL options, she could look into doing a course before you travel or when you get over there.

The wife knows a few teachers over here and there's next to no work in southern Ontario. However, if you look further up north you should have absolutely no bother getting a really, really well paid teaching gig, since the government is doing everything they can to get people up there (the weather is absolutely dreadful in winter, so they're even buying houses for people who'll move)
