my dad has a camper van that has only one seatbelt on the rear facing seat but its two seats. the single belt goes all the way across the two seats. did anyone ever come across this. could you use 1 seatbelt like this for two people. its only a lap belt.
if not is it allowable to install another one of these belts yourself or does it need to be certified. completly new to this.

Is there any chance that a second lap belt and buckle have become trapped between the cushions? This quite often happens on mine.
If not have a look for anchor points that may indicate they've been removed. If you've got the anchors then installing another belt will be no problem.

Anchors are sometimes under the cushions (you may have the remove the lower seat cushion for a thorough inspection) otherwise they may be extended from boltholes through the chassis from the floor (so look for an empty bolt-hole or a bolted hole you suspect is serving no purpose). The clue to where another anchor could be, if one exists, is in some sort of symmetry with the known ones.

I checked it completely the seatbelt is connected to the frame of the seat. There are bolt holes empty but there is no evidence of there being anything there previously. There is no wear marks or nothing.
Should I just buy another one and fit it myself? And where could I get one?

Scrap yard so, I reckon. Bring a socket set and the belt you already have with you so you can test if it fits the buckle you will be looking at.
...the seatbelt is connected to the frame of the seat.
If you can't get that particular seat belt out have a try at any other in the vehicle or a buckle if that's easier, likely they're all compatible. At a guess I'd say if you can stick with the same manufacturer any rear car seat center position will have the double bracket you require with belt on one side buckle on the other.

A main dealer should also have the parts you require to spec. as well as the exploded diagrams of your vehicle to confirm whether there is one missing in the first place. Perhaps just phone them, chassis no. at hand with the inquiry about the part. Once you know it's a genuine anchor any belt bracket will do, they're all rated.

Short of that there's some links in this thread that's running along the same lines. Also this thread (post #20) might be of interest.

As for the two for one special scenario; I can't imagine myself how strapping two bodies together will prevent them from colliding...that said the only real potential for serious injury from that position would be a very high relative speed rear end collision by a larger vehicle.

Careful getting one in the scrap yard, if its a recoil type they will only work in one orientation so you need to make sure it was installed in the same orintation as your seat. Or get a adjustable /non recoil type.

Personally I'd buy a new securon one, it will cost about the same if you get it delivered with parcel motel.
