Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Have a gs450h now coming up to 2 years now only thing gone wrong has been a tyre pressure sensor other expenses were a set of front pads and a service spent on a new set of wheels/tyres but they wer'nt needed ,I've done 28k since I got it,10.1l/100 is what it averages,550km usually out of a tank mostly around town have got 680 out of it on a long journey.
What year is it? It is technically hybrid, but in good way. Electrical things to look out in that part?

I always wanted a Volvo since I was a kid ( sad, I know), but S60 and S80 do not make me wiggle down there at all. D5 don't have much going power wise out of bigger engine. Only 180hp.

I looked more in to lexus. Would like is220d, but they have horrible gearboxes and a car that was rushed in, because market needed diesel and they had none is not something I out much faith in.
So I looked more in to GS ones and I kind of loving it. Specially gs450h. Looks like it would be a win for me in both worlds. Going back to nice smooth petrol car and mpg is actually manageable. Luxury is outstanding too.
Original idea was to get post 08 530d or 330d, but price difference between 06-07 and 08 is just laughable. Saving 750 per year on tax, but pay about 10k extra for one years newer car. So I would be looking more in to 06-07 car and pay that tax in one go.
I am just afraid Google GS 450h amd find out it has tendencies of blowing up randomly.

GS450h is a beast in a straight line (remember, it's bones of 350bhp). Rock solid engine; car generally just susceptible to the same few niggles as the 300 - iffy xenons, seizing rear calipers, think that's about it really.

We couldn't persuade you into a LS600h could we?! :D

I was actually shocked a bit by its power figures. Its actually impressive. Overkill for my needs, but **** it. Ironically it will still have better mpg then my subaru wrx. I know that I am doing it wrong by looking for something big and still give decent mpg, but unfortunately I need something that is still able to pass petrol station s now and then. If it can get 30mpg on my work runs which is pretty much no city driving, then it will work. I think 600h won't manage that. :D
I still got time until next year, but I want to do some research already and keep am eye on this thread. I don't want to be in that position where I got all ready to go for a change and still have no clue what to go for.

Yup. 240km/h cruising is impressive but what else is impressive about it really? And I actually like the E60 M-Sport as a car to look at.

They're actually not great cruisers due to M-Sport suspension, and RFT tyres, as well as those Hideous spider wheels that most come with.

They're also not economical nor reliable either!

Explain what's so good about them so!
    Sarcasm?

    As above.

A surprising dig by someone like yourself. Nice try, remember what you told me yourself, don't take these things personally just because you have an E60 ;)
    Can confirm 535d are boring.

    QFT. :)

The M57 engine is extremely reliable so I don't know where you're getting that from.
If you wanted it as a cruiser get the SE version which is a lot softer. Granted RFTs back then were a lot harsher but the newest generation are miles better. I still prefer non-rft's anyway.
As for economical? You're obviously joking.
The Spyder wheels are not the default alloys which are the MV2 so again this is personal taste.

Irony is that after googling every choice the least issues had lexus GS300 and BMW 535d. The biggest issues were Merc cls 320cdi, BMW 730d and in a way lexus GS 450h, due to battery issues, which costs 5k eu.

I am not defender of 535d and I never drove one, but it is definitely not the worst option.

Only Lexus dealers charge €5000 as they replace the whole battery pack. There's specialist out there who'll replace the affected cells for a few hundred. Read a thread on the owners forum of a lad in Cork who did it himself for €1-200

I might even take you on that offer when I get some breathing space from work.
I was always jap and now alfa man. Never liked Germans and they are by far not as reliable as people say. Unfortunately in these kind car category you pretty much got only Germans.
Was even toying with idea of is250, but feck all difference in mpg and GS series is definitely above it.

You'd wonder is the seller oblivious or if they are trying to pull the wool over a prospective buyer's eyes, claiming its "taxed"

The disc is still there alright but once the car is transferred into private hands its technically no longer taxed.

I don't think that''s right; I think the basis of assessment needs to be changed at the next tax renewal date. At least that'a how the forms work.

Problem for me is that the key in that is exactly where my right kneecap goes or at least it was in the XJRs and Super 8s I tried.

Won't work, once the log book is transferred over to you you get notified that the tax rate is no longer valid and you must purchase it. Happened to me when I bought a jeep that has previously been tax exempt. Was only a month left on it so no big deal.

    You say 'must' purchase it.
So you buy the car with years disc in the window. Once changed over, you get notification that tax is due. What if you don't buy it - you still have a disc. Then 1 year later they would look for arrears I guess. Sell to wife then.
It's messy alright, probably not worth the hassle.

It is an offence for both: driving without the disc and driving without the tax...
So if APR car picks you up, you are still in trouble...

But it wouldn't be flagged cause the system would believe it's taxed.

Nope. The same system that notified Blazer, also updated PULSE. Flagging the car as not taxed.

Now as long as you don't get checked against PULSE, you'll be alright of course with the invalid disc in the window. It sure looks valid to humans / guards :D

But you will have the issue come renewal time that mickdw described

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 203 ✭✭wilford

You'll never get insurance afaik either as it will flag as soon as you give them the reg that it's a psv unless you change the "logbook" I've been there tried that could only get temp cover while waiting for the book.

You'll have an issue at most checkpoints IMO.
I've noticed in the last 2/3 years for whatever reason AGS actually seem to read the disc rather than just glance at it :)

Only if the Garda puts the reg into PULSE. No Garda will actually have a close read, cop on that the tax is only €95 and start questioning you about how your PSV business is doing. That just won't happen :D

Quite the opposite. I drove down a Jaguar S-type recently (3l, so the annual tax is €1,494). Tax out since early last year. Got stopped at a checkpoint. Garda pointed his torch at the tax disc. Had a good look. Then he asked me "We are looking for some criminals here. I don't suppose you have seen any?" When I laughed and said I didn't, he waved me on...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,079 ✭✭✭✭Duke O Smiley

Tbh on the last few checkpoints i've been through the discs in the window were scrutinised, though probably bc i was in a Tipo and not an S type..

@unkel I think the car type does make a difference. From my experience, driving a large engine luxobarge with no tax tends to draw more attention than your typical everyday motor at checkpoints

I think with the recent and much publicised clampdown on dodgy log books where big engined cars were taxed as smaller ones any large car is going to draw attention at a checkpoint.
Not to mention a car with scandalous tax is going to be hard to keep taxed all the time so its an easy target!
