Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Yeah, it’s an early model packed with new (at the time) technology. Things were bound to break and they did, and still do. I have absolutely no experience with this model but have read a lot over the years on their problems.

The photos in that particular ad are a bit dodgy too. First thing that spring to mind was why is the seller standing so far away? Is he or she hiding something on the paintwork?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,660 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

All the same, offer him €1800 today and he'd take it. These things were, and still are, so overpriced when new.

That S80 is the beans! Not seen one with that spec, an ex-demo perhaps?

It's just done a new nct so what's the risk.
And most people don't really have a clue about taking pics. He probably thought it looked better that far away to get a better profile.

NCT provides no real certainty regarding the condition of a car. The suspension on these cars = big bills if it goes wrong and they can be an electrical nightmare.
They are absolutely beautiful though, drove one years ago.

I brought a barge for an NCT last Thursday as part of a test drive. It failed on a rear suspension imbalance. Not too bad thought I. I then brought it to my mechanic and we put it on the ramp. Both front tyres were so bald they had the wire showing and there was a hughe amount of play on the passenger front wheel due to a wishbone that required replacement. Don't assume the NCT is an indicator of condition.

    But it failed.
This one passed the nct so suspension should be fine.
Tyres should be fine. The only thing that could be a problem is maybe engine related but the fact that the car passed the nct at least shows what’s good.

I think his point was it only failed on the suspension but it had other problems that it passed on.

I'd never judge a car on an nct even take an imbalance for example with the breaks they are just checking that they are both wearing at the same rate but not checking that maybe the discs are nearly worn down.

Suspensions are even worse they are checking that they getting similar readings on both suspension but they both could be nearly knackered and on a car like that need changing parts of suspension would make the car worthless again you factor in everything else.

The suspension tests don’t work like that.
I have put my previous car through and both frontsides were outside tolerance. Off to BMW and had them cover the items it failed on.

Has it changed? Wasn't suspensions done on imbalance? Yes they had to be inside a certain minimum but the minimum wouldn't be that high.

They do just check imbalance plus visual. They have no way of measuring whether shocks are performing to required spec.

Yes he was :D Small dealer, he knew I was seriously interested, it's a difficult sell and the NCT only had until Feb to run so he agreed to let me have it NCT'd at my expense and my mechanic check it. Very fair of him. I'm waiting on part costs based on NCT and inspection before I hopefully make an offer.

Gorgeous car, hard to believe what you can get for under 6k these days

€1809 tax would irk me for a 3.5L V6. If i'm paying top rate, its V8 or V12 or don't bother! That shape still looks remarkably fresh all the same.

Out of curiosity what would you get in a V8 or V12 for around 6k?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,469 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

What are those petrols of that vintage like?
That type S class can generate serious bills but perhaps some are diesel related.

Lots of options, A8s 4.2l, E38 740s/750s, E60 550s if you can find one, E65 7s 745/740/750/760 (yes 760s can be had at this price), S500s, CL500s/600s, Range Rovers, XJs. You'd be stepping back the years most likely, but its only recently this thread became about lower displacement Lexus/Volvo models (not that theres anything wrong with that), for years this thread was mostly all the cars mentioned above. Harder to find the V12s of course, but V8s in this bracket are abundant, albeit not always good buys.

The engine is the main thing going for that 760, incredible someone would spend €170,000 on a car with no heated seats and a whole range of other options.

Not sure if someone has posted this already but its now at the 5k mark.
I'd get it myself if I sold my F10 in the morning as I'm gonna need 2 cards for the future.

Lovely car but dreaming at that price.
    At least 2K overpriced.
    No interior pics too.
No mention of rocker cover gasket replacement or VANOS seals.

I think what's I find more incredible is that a 170k car doesn't come with heated seats as standard.

Putting the timing belt change note in Tipp-Ex on the engine is like a red rag to a bull for me, what idiot does that, did he get some lad to change it at the back of a pub or worse still not get it changed at all? How hard is it to keep a receipt as evidence it was changed

Receipts leave paper trails when your paying Joe the mechanic living across the road, in cash lads. A bottle of Tippex is cheaper and less traceable. :pac:

This....to a certain extent. My mechanic (who's a proper mechanic) does me a cash price on all work. If I was selling it I'd gladly supply his number for anybody to contact to talk about service history and work done

Sure, but will Joe Spanner let you do cross-check his books?

Unless I can call a garage (or the owner - privacy issues of course) and independently get a printout of all the work done on the car, the receipt is worth only marginally more than tippex.

You seem to be missing my point. The reason most people don't keep receipts from work done is because they get the work done as cheap as possible which usually means cash in hand, no VAT, etc. Of course someone could do up their own fake receipts instead of using Tippex but it's generally not the main reason people don't keep or get receipts for work done.
