Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

It is a high tax car so that is not inconceivable...

You would really want to do a history check on that and suss out when the owners changed, if it was every 1.5 years you're laughing, one owner for 6 years and 5 in three years could be the hint.

in addition to the litany of electrical problems and overall shoddy reliability. (wouldnt touch a 2002/2003 built one with a bargepole)

Registered as a CL500 according to cartell. No pictures of the engine and a few pictures of AMG badges that you can buy on ebay. Not doubting that it could be genuine but the incorrect registration poses a few questions..

Early AMG - non supercharged version which arrived in 2003.

The non supercharged ones used the same chassis code as the CL500 but the engines were tweaked by AMG, up 60bhp (360bhp v's 300bhp) and 5.5l as opposed to 5.0.

2003 Supercharged ones have their own chassis code and major engine upgrades. Supercharger being the main one taking them to 500 bhp.

Many standard CL500's with AMG badges and wheels and as the chassis numbers are the same you need to do your homework and verify the engine capacity if its pre 2003, Supercharged (Kompressor) have the quad pipes so thats a usual give away and when you open the bonnet you'll definitely know.

Ive missed the posts in this thread over the weekend, please someone post some more barges! I will be looking soon I think, or I might end up being more cowardly and going for an estate car.

Would love the S430 if it wasn't for the tax and insurance.

M5 insurance for me is €750 a year in Poland
A Matiz would cost me more to insure here!!

Had been wondering that too recently. The only decent barges that I could find were S280s and S320s.

Quite a bit over budget, but does include an LPG conversion (deduct the cost of an LPG conversion and we are in budget)

Plus taxing testing and delivery you could at 4k to that price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,523 ✭✭✭✭Esel

    £4,500 = €5,500
    VRT = €1727
Travel, AA check etc say €400
    NCT €55

    Total c. €7,680

    Not your ornery onager

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,694 ✭✭✭✭L-M

Youd have to tax it so landed driving for 3 months presuming kt passes the test over 8k.

Great cars. The last great S class before the w221, which imo was a return to form for Mercedes.

Got a Taxi in one of these from the Airport in Wroclaw a few years ago, with the missus visiting family, and I still remember how well it handled the cobblestoned parts of the city (makes me think air suspension is a little overrated)

The taxi driver's opening conversational gambit to my missus was (in Polish):
"Homosexuals are destroying Wroclaw". Got to love the directness of the Poles :D

When the seller says 'bulletproof' I wonder if he means that in a literal sense, given that its an ex-presidential car or whatever. If so it would weigh more than the moon, and handle like an oil tanker.

That car isn't literally bulletproof, seller means it in terms of reliability.

The B6/B7 protection levels that Mercedes offered came with much thicker glass, and would have much higher profile tyres than that to handle the extra weight. Tyres were available as run flats as well, they were huge bulky things and stood out a mile.

Mercedes/BMW/Audi offering B6/B7 in the 90's was their first reaction to tailoring a car for Eastern European markets, they were very popular in Albania and Russia.
