Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Back a few years ago, (2 or so), there was a guy on pistonheads website in a similar situation to yourself with multiple cars. The readers of the website called his bluff and demanded that he picture his cars with a tub of custard in each picture, with each car. Not just sitting on the bonnet either, interior pics, with a named custard widely available in the local shops, (creamed rice or something).
Anyway the pictures were simply sensational! He had high end cars, including rolls Royce and Aston Martins et Al with pictures of a tub of creamed rice on the steering wheel of an Aston and on the bonnet of a Bentley with the car cover only revealing part of the car. The way he did it was excellent and proved beyond doubt that he did indeed own the mouthwatering selection of car flagships that he said he did.
So, we want some shots of your car's with a tub of custard (or whatever) in them, and interior shots too to prove that they are yours.
You will be my hero then.

Edit: correct me if I got the cars wrong, I can't remember exactly.....

That is not the exact story. The poster was in fact Jason Plato, and he told them this. But they called his bluff and asked for a picture of himself with some Ambrosia. Plato (of Fifth Gear presenter) posted a picture of himself with said custard and presto the thread became legend.

The tread is from 4 years ago.

Here is the link for anyones perusal.

I'm thinking about for a week now to go and see that S430 and there's one S500 too for a similar price on Donedeal. Haven't rang seller yet, just can't make me head around wheter W220 is a decent car or money drainer. Heard they have lots of sensors that cause lots of problems and that air suspension...I had W140 before and it was very good.

Well ecomomy wise I'd say there isn't much of a diference between the 5.0 and the 4.3.
I think I read on HonestJohns website that the 320 diesel was the best to go for.. But the S500 wouldn't be half bad ;)
View them both and go for a test in them, only way to make up your mind for sure.

In what world is a 3.2l diesel better than a 5l petrol?
Certainly not in this one, get out!

Bear1 did you ever get that thesis?

Yes tax is high, as to parking space is only a premium in the city. LucklyI have a son who lives in the country with lots of room and two large barns
Drive them as I fell at the moment, plan is to have the 5 at the same time then alternate. Have 2 Jaguar because when I got first I was so impressed I wanted the top of the range and the Lexus forums 400 is the one preferred and this came up I am glad I bought it it's probably a better car than the later one

Given that Jaguar is my own personal weakness, what do you own? Just nice to know another fan! Thanks.

To be honest, it was more of a story that was flying around these boards a while back. I recall how I thought it transpired and suggested that bill do the same, for nostalgic reasons of course. That's all really.
@ bill, I think you have nothing to prove btw. It wasn't meant to sound like we didn't believe you and my apologies if it came across like that.

    BTT :D

Still looking out for a Jag for myself but got hold up financially with house purchase. Will be more likely an s-type though later this year. My car will have to be able to to tow my holiday gear and XJ was never homologated to do it (it's not legal to fit a towbar to it). And seriously, Jag XJ with a caravan:pac:, gimme a break:pac:

Agree with Bill, XJ's are great cars, very narrow market if selling though and lots of German barges to compete with. Can't figure out why XJ or even S-type seem to cost more than same year s-class.

Now what's going on with these CLS's, suspect timing chain sprocket on balancer shaft going, typical for MB 3.5 V6 of that era

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/mercedes-benz-cls-350/6564509
    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/2006-mersedes-benz-cls350/6755534

Have a soft spot for these but upkeep costs are beyond my league still. Tax+insurance 3k plus budget 1-2k a year for maintenance I reckon.

  • Registered Users Posts: 285 ✭✭ArnieSilvia

Just checked what I wrote only 2 months ago:
CLS is great, love that hooligan character of it. Saying that, just looked at them now and this kinda stands out:

    2007 10-14k
    2005 7k

In 2 years it'll be worth half of 7k again. It's still depreciating fast.

    Now we're talking about 5k for a 2006 car :eek::confused:

At this rate they'll be in 4k range by end of this year

Not that I get there very often myself tho.

They would be absolutely buzzing to see it I can tell you, not much modern lancia's about. The last one was a lovely kappa coupe that belonged to a Lithuanian man that unfortunately ended up in Leon recycling due to unpaid VRT.
Had a good old snoop around it and tried in vain to buy it before they turned it into an oversized dice:(

    Sacriledge.
Why they don't auction confiscated cars off to the highest buyer is beyond me.
Someone would have easily paid a couple of hundred for the kappa, while not a lot, its more than what they'd get crushing it into a cube:mad:

Test until next year. Nice bangernomic piece of luxury for someone. Pity its only a 3L

No I'm not, but the wife is :) I'm in Warsaw on job assignments so I spend quite a lot of time here and the wife is from the east (Bialystok).

And why in the name of fook did they have to scrap it? I know the answer already but it's such a rare car to see both here and in the UK.. actually near on impossible to find.
I always liked the Kappa, something about it. There is also the Lybra which I like, the basic spec on them is beyond impressive.
As I said, being in Warsaw I get to see quite a few cars that in Ireland we wouldn't see, also vice-versa. Certain Jap cars you'd never see here whereas in Ireland they are extremely common.

It's truly a shame and the funny thing is I was selling a BMW some months back and one of the guys who came to look at it was the original owner of that kappa and said that he regretted selling it and tried to buy it back but the new owner wanted a fortune for it. Very disappointed to hear how it ended up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,825 ✭✭✭✭bear1

I had a look at a car site from Italy and Kappas are going for next to nothing there.
And the choice of engines are impressive. I remember being in once and the spec was quite nice and it's bigger inside than you'd think.
Hard to believe they came out in 1995.

Just be aware of the dash tamper dot showing...possible mileage correction.

Also be aware of other potential lies too; there's nothing Alpina about that car other than the badges as you probably know. It's also double glazed, not bulletproof and the wheels are E65 Style 92s. Make sure the offset is right and there are no ABS/DSC lights on.

EDIT: Oh, I take it you already viewed it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,466 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

Is it really armoured? Wouldnt have thought so. Surely destroy the car

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,660 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

    Not a chance. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 341 ✭✭discodavie

No not armoured at all ha ha. But went over for a look. A well specced one with genuine sub 100miles is hard enough got and is a genuine example (mot's to proove all the way back to 2002 (all checked too))

Had a tip but repaired last owner is career mod and long spells out of the country.

Buying from this lad who seems ok. Met last week , going to collect this week. Didn't have the extra few hours last and is only a ton to fly return.

As for the alpina it's only wheels and badges but looks good I'll enjoy for a bit. Expect to see it up on dd in about 12 weeks.

That E38 looks like an interesting car. The wheels are grim though, M-Parallel 18's are the only wheel for that 7. Fresh shock top bolts on one side, old ones on the other, I'm sure you'll have fun unearthing that cars story! Best of luck.

Funny you should ask - I spotted a Transit on eBay last night currently in the UK, on Irish plates, and claiming to have a valid UK MOT too.

It's not possible to put a foreign NCT/MOT on a car not registered in that country.
Don't know how they got to have one and even still I can't see any NCT on the windshield.

If its being sold in the UK maybe they're just putting down MOT as people wouldn't know what NCT / DOE is.
