Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Sorry to hear about the engine failure, Merc aren't what they used to be. They are playing off the brand name and have been for at least 15 years although some of their cars are superbly styled. It is madness to pay 48k for a e250 with 120k km on it. Id be thinking that's 8 years of average miles so worth 20% of new ie less than 10k.
How much is a new e250?
I think he paid 48k for it new then put 120k on it before the engine went

What year is the car Bill?
Any chance of writing to Merc for maybe a goodwill gesture if the car has a FSH?
That is ****e though to be honest.
I had a situation like that when I had a 156, although different how it happened.
Road dropped quickly and I smacked the sump off of the concrete.
Hadn't realised and kept driving (yes I was that dumb). Oil light came on and I pulled over.
I was confused as I had only had it serviced and in my infinite wisdom presumed that a sensor has gone wonky.
Kept driving until the engine died.
Towed and diagnosed as the engine being fecked.
Changed the engine and off she went.
So I can feel somewhat your pain

    Thats really bad luck Bill.
No car should pack up at 120k km. Not even cheap sh1t boxes.

Not anymore, they've become a bit cheaper to repair as it's a known failure.

Something like the N47 Timing Chain - used to be a 6k repair, now you can get it fixed for 2k.

Ah yeah, that's great value alright.
    Said no one ever.

I'd say spending 2k on your 14k car is better than spending 6k or writing it off.

    Said no one ever.

In modern diesel terms - a 2 k repair means one might actually consider buying one of these BMWs* - rather then writing off the purchase which youd be inclined to do otherwise when the repair was 6 k.

How BMW considered it okay to have a design fault that would leave owners with 6 k bills at 80 to 100 k miles in the first place is another matter entirely....

If the repair bill is now 2 k - that potentially helps resale of these cars by making them a more viable proposition at the right money

It also means you are more likely to be looking at a 20d with the issue FIXED already - rather then one which is been sold BECAUSE IT HAS the issue.

*If a 2 k to fix issue turns you of a modern diesel - then youd be avoiding modern diesels full stop imo

No NCT, but still pretty good value for money.
New Timing Chain fitted as well.

New NCT, plenty of ponies from the 4.4 litre and only 60k miles.

A bit more classic. You honestly can't go wrong with the W140. Quite possibly the best S-Class ever built.
    And it's under €1k!

    I'm liking the S500.
Heated and AC'd seats front and back.
    Tv front and back
    Elec seats front and back
Sweet mother of God that would be some cruiser...

I wouldn't get over excited about TV in cars of this vintage.... may need some upgrade since switchover to SAORVIEW :-/.. And besides the only time I could ever think of TV being used is for the missus to watch the soaps whilst queuing at the ferry port.... and even then the chances of times coinciding...

Could be a new thread "What do you watch on TV in your car" :-)

I'd imagine you could hook up a dvd to it though. Then it would make sense.
Incidentally, if you have a tv in the car do you pay the tv license? :D

The Legend has TV / Sat nav front n' back, you can just pop a DVD into the CD player thingy on the dash, presumably the same with the Merc.

That's actually an interesting question. I wonder if the licence is linked to an "abode"? And will they try and pick up cars with the new legislation?

Youd be surprised , a lot of marques the mpeg2 dvd video playback is a software option or hardware module that has to be enabled .

Also ive found that 12 volt video modulators allow you endless possibilities with older cars with analouge tv , adding saorview , aux in , dvd players or games consoles is a doddle.

Yep, cheapest online atm. There was one in the bangernomics thread a few months ago; with NCT and 200,000 miles. It was originally €2100, dropped to €1950.

High mileage but 2005 reg and NCT'd until 02/15.

Know these can be quite problematic and expensive to repair if certain things go wrong and as a result of this reputation can be had for small money....still would imagine this one is still priced well for year...I say that without being too in tune with the prices of em.

Has the 320 reg an all for those into that sort of thing (personally I think its a load of boll0x):p

That Daimler has been around ages .
I looked at it a a show in dublin in march and to be honest was a little bit disappointed .
It looks better in the pictures , in saying that it was indoors .

The merc looks and is bulletproof !
Owl fella had a 420 se for years,it and a 450 sel I think it were the best of all 8 Mercs he ever had .

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 483 ✭✭daveohdave

I wouldn't be mad about the colour, but I'd take that Merc all the same if I'd the dosh, it'd make a great cheap daily for someone that doesn't do a lot of miles.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,354 ✭✭✭Sobanek

If that W126 was black / blue, I'd be down in my credit union tomorrow.

Turns out a chap I met the other night has three 7 series at the moment, a 760i, 740i and a 745i.

The 745i has been up for sale for a month and not a single call, see it here:

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/bmw-745li-lpg/7255933

I can see why, it's a rubbish ad, but if anyone is looking for a bargain, i'm sure he'll let it go for peanuts.

Sounds bad, all right. It would be OK if there was just a replacement of seals, etc., but it says "complete engine rebuild". That puts a major question mark on that offer.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,193 ✭✭✭Cleveland Hot Pocket

    Hmm.... that sounds interesting
If I don't buy that daimler on ebay that I linked to in the "today i saw a car for sale thread" (still waiting to bid until it gets closer to the end) then I may consider this.

The number plate on the Merc, could it have been an ex Government car?
