Me too, me too! I have mine nearly 2 years now and I love it, may need to change soon due to family changes but it's the nicest car I've ever driven except for maybe the A7 quattro.

Japanese quality it was up for 7K so 5k should buy it I'd love it!!!

Anyone gone to see this? I'm going tomorrow to check it out, anything to look out for.

well obviously the milage is high so check it has had loads of service, I am not sure what gives with the battery on this but I cant imagine it will be cheap if it needs to be replaced. Let us know how it goes. You could probably get it for 5k or there abouts, thats a lot of car for the money.

How does the GS 450 h (and GS in general) compare to the LS 430 on

    1) comfort
    2) fuel economy
    3) general ownership????

My brother has one of said LS 430s with high miles on so it may be "time to say goodbye" at some point relatively soon.

Thoughts on how the 6 k Lexus/luxobarge in general ownership experience is likely to compare to the 18/20 k Skoda Superb 170 tdi DSG his also likely to be considering also welcome.

20 k mile mileage a year - is there any case to be made for the Skoda at all.

Lower tax and better fuel for sure - but 10 to 12 k more expensive on day one....

And while Superbs seem very reliable generally - does that not bring the pitfall that the next owner will have "the issues"

Apologies if this is seen as derailing the thread - but he isn't close enough to purchase just yet for a thread of its own

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,698 ✭✭✭Hachiko

GS and LS are different segments, if you have been in a LS430 you know what to expect. 20K miles is relatively high. A LS/GS are in a different class to a Skoda. Depends what you want to spend and what is important for you in motoring. A fully topped out Superb in L&k is very nice but will cost a bit more than the older Luxobarge Lexus you have in mind, all depends on where you want to put your money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,340 ✭✭✭mullingar

The last year of the Ls430 was 2006 and it was €118k new, the first 07 GS430h was €85k new (Inc that vrt rebate), so a nice €30k+ difference!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,698 ✭✭✭Hachiko

^^ that's why I said they are different segments, the LS is the top model, LS430 superseded by the -LS460 and 600HL if you want somewhere to live in.

The LS430 is a fine thing, you can stick on LPG if you are worried on fuel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,902 ✭✭✭frozenfrozen

aside from the install cost is there any downside at all to lpg?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,340 ✭✭✭mullingar

As an owner of a lpg'd Ls430, no.

It does around23-24 on petrol, 19-20mpg on gas so with lpg at half the price of petrol it's the financial equivalent to a 38mpg petrol only car.

Loss of boot space/spare wheel well for the tank would be about the only downside.

Not in the rules of this thread, but for anyone interested these W221 S Classes seem to be finally dropping below €10k. This 9 year old S350 petrol with 78,000 miles and 11 months NCT asking €9k. Ad has been up a few days though, it's just been updated by the dealer so a bit of haggling might get a better deal.

yeah I noticed that myself recently. The 221 is probably the next car I will go for, I was waiting for them to come into this price region. there is another one up with Dublin dealer asking 10,000. I wont buy one unless its black though, personally... Although on top of the black, I would ideally like an S500. If the tax is the same, why go for the S350! Unless the 500 is price a good bit more, but there were two up recently enough asking 15k from dealers...

What a waste of your time, nothing worse than it, they should have mentioned it in their ad, so much for their description "Another stunning example of an approved vehicle from Kylemore Car's catalogue of pre owned cars.". Did they think that the small matter of Check hybrid system would be overlooked?

A quick Google points to the battery which costs 5k! I suppose you could offer him 900..:D

I would have no expectation of it being a brand new car but I would expect the engine to be in such a state that it doesn't try to warn you about its state.

The sales guy said that the battery pack was under warranty with Lexus for 15 years but I would be fairly sure that wouldn't be honoured since the service history isn't with Lexus.

i don't think its 15 years , and with a car that complicated I think the ex owner was an idiot, hybrid systems are so manufacturer specific they should always be dealer serviced until we have a few specialists rolling round.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,902 ✭✭✭frozenfrozen

and tbh if it was under warranty why didn't they send it back and then they could put 'brand new battery installed by lexus' on the ad.

Sales guy did seem to be surprised when I told him about it which is nearly more worrying. So either there is something massively wrong with the car or there is something potentially massively wrong with the car. For either of those two to be the case and the sales guy unaware of it, scared me off.

The '07 Lexus came with an 8 year / 100k miles battery warranty, which is now expired. I really hope Kylemore Cars won't find a fool to sell that car to :(

When I looked into these before, I remember that the hybrid system was warranted for 8 years which to be fair is excellent.
What a chancer though trying to say it's fully covered to 15 and him with it sitting faulty on the forecourt.
I generally find with these type of sales people that they immediately get thick and make it like im the time waster.
I once went to view a 2 year old Audi A6 at a renault dealer. All soft chat. Car was belonging to service manager and was looked after on the button.
In the end it turned out it was a private sale with no history and the worst aligned front end ive ever seen. I told him at that point having looked around it that I wasnt interested and there was no point driving it.
He jumped into it and took off as if I'd pulled a gun on him.

Just after checking the s classes again, there is now an 07 with 90k on clock asking 9950! Ridiculous!

Thats 2 I've seen on dd with the check hybrid system,2 lad's in the uk have found solutions to this problem without paying full wack it usually involves replacing 1 or 2 cells in the battery which are available separately from specialists, afaik the car will drive fine just running on petrol power.

Another stunning example of an approved vehicle from Kylemore Car's catalogue of pre owned cars.

This 'approved' business always makes me laugh. Do they have other vehicles for sale that are not approved? If so, I wouldn't like to see them, judging by what the approved ones are like.

Only slightly less boring than an XG, with about everything an S class has, all wrapped up in a nice cocoon of Japanese blandness. If you're not bothered by the fact that its Fwd, and you don't mind very much for prestige, they make for very very nice cars. This is identical to my da's old one from 99-05, 99-D-85980

I like them, looks in great condition. That said, maximum tax and underwhelming power and performance (only about 200bhp or something like that). And very bland and dated looking. They will literally have to nearly give it away. No way he will get anywhere near a 4 figure sum for that car.

Nope, not at all - hence why I didn't post it in Bangernomics :) also main dealer parts aren't very cheap. That said, my da's had 180k miles when he got rid of it and it never gave any trouble really. The only time I remember it being back at the dealers for any real length of time was when my mam tore the side of it off the gates

They're also savage thirsty, much worse than a 3.5 V8 Bimmer from the same period.

Nice car, nice spec. A car like a Rover 75 shouldn't normally be seen as a luxobarge, but fact is that it has a ride more comfortable / luxurious than many cars posted in here

That said, the price is optimistic imho. The much more desirable automatic would come close but I doubt he'll even get €1,500 for this car...

Should go near that money if right. About 1750 I'd say.
I sold an 05 1.8 petrol with 160k miles and 20 months test for 1350.

That was a couple of years ago then when the car was about 8 years old? That's a good bit younger than this car. You still did fairly well selling if for that price!

That was a good price considering the petrols suffered from head gasket poblems.

Nope It was end of december and got the long test by going in early for a voluntary early test 4 months before 10th birthday.
Imo a fully functioning tidy late 75 is still worth 1200 to 2000.
Alot of them have niggles that make them un economical to repair for some and certainly make them a zero value car for any dealer to take in.
I've sold a couple but that is most recent one.

ventilated seats and the wood wheel, its well spec'd anyway, pity its not black but that price is dreaming , 4k tops, absolute tops. those have appeared in similar spec with not too far off miles for 3k .

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,698 ✭✭✭Hachiko

its a LS its going to be well specced anyway, they are going for 5k ish in the UK and usually are high milers, if that is 89k miles its really nothing on them cars. Probably a tad pricey when you take tax into account.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,029 ✭✭✭Sabre Man

I paid about the same for a very similar LS430 two years ago with no tax and more miles.
